Howard Stern in Talks to Join NBC's 'America's Got Talent'

I'd like to see reactions from people in THIS forum though.

Personally, I call bullshit on this rumor. Over the years there have been many cases where Stern was "rumored" as a reality show judge, or a mainstream talk show host, or in a sitcom, or some other network friendly fare... and they never happen. Inevitably its just usually Stern himself, or some members of his massive but dangerous fanbase, shit-stirring and making it up.

He hates to travel. He hates censoring himself. He hates NBC. All of this argues this is an incredibly dumb, transparent lie of a rumor.

On the network/production side there are just as many barriers. First, the network would never trust him on live shows--and would BARELY trust him on edited episodes, because of a fear if he disliked the editing he'd tear them a new one on his radio show. Secondly, they'd never fork over $15 million for him. Thirdly, since he'd still have to do his radio show, one assumes his whole entourage would have to be put up in each audition city--and that could bankrupt the production.

the show is a piece of garbage.. so why wouldn't Stern take the money to do something he can make tons of fun of on his own show?

Because he's already filthy rich, and as I said, he loathes traveling, network politics, and there's no chance at all a network would actually allow him on live TV.

The rumor is B.S. from both sides. He'd never be offered it, and also he'd never actually take it.

Howard stated himself today that he isn't in any sort of negotiations for AGT... and that if he was... he wouldn't discuss it until there's something more concrete (a contract I'd imagine)... to buttress his announcement. There's been many rumors floated around about Stern taking over as a judge or MC for many game shows/contests... and yes, some of it no doubt was stirred up by his rampant fans. Stern has also stated that he'd love to do a game show of some sort "as long as I don't have to work hard... I just want to sit there, and speak my mind".

As far as Stern not being able to hold his tongue for network TV... I call that.. because he pushed the envelope for years on terrestrial radio.. yes.. but never stepped over the boundries that the FCC had set up. In fact, he occasionally plays clips of OTHER broadcasters (in various markets/numerous situations) where they DO blurt out the "censored" words... and cackles like a hen when he does. But in his interviews that I've seen (Letterman... 60 Minutes for example)... he's been able to carry a conversation without what some may call a "potty mouth". SO it's not like he's incapable of it... he would just rather be able to speak his mind as he see's fit. But if he took the AGT gig, I'm quite sure he'd be able to comport himself properly.

His disdain for traveling, his desire to do even LESS work then he is now (down to three days a week on his sattellitte radio show)... and let's face it... he made a BUNDLE signing onto Sirius in the first place... I don't think Howard's all that strapped for cash... ergo... nothing to this rumor.

Yeah, I think lack of interest and no real need for the money are the two things that make this unlikely. He doesn't like censoring himself, but he's intelligent enough to know that sometimes it's necessary. He's hardly incapable of controlling himself; he's just now in a forum where it matters much less.

But the issue isn't really whether or not he could ACTUALLY hold his tongue. Its whether or not a network like NBC would BELIEVE he can (and whether or not Stern in turn could believe they'd stand by him).

I COULD see them being so desperate for ratings and publicity at this point in their existence that maybe they'd risk him "accidentally" going into a rant about lesbians, or anal sex, during a live prime time show. That they'd theoretically be willing to endure letter writing campaigns from conservative groups, and potential FCC fines. But would Stern in turn trust THEM, NBC, to support him? No. He'd assume they'd fold under pressure I think, because... that's always been their pattern. Ergo, he'd never trust them enough to sign a contract in the first place. He loves his money, but he's not the kind to take a quick buck simply because its available. So dangling money in front of him isn't enough. Stern is the kind of person who'd want assurances. Ones NBC would never give, I think. That's why this rumor is B.S. (aside from the more obvious reasons like the tough logistics and his legendary hatred of traveling).

Here's the first actual detailed footage of Stern performing his new job:

Heh, looking back at the beginning of this thread I was pretty dead wrong about whether or not this would happen, eh? :lol
