    Superman and the Christian right

    http://comicbookmovie.com/fansites/r...46098#comments

As of today’s release of Action Comics #1 by Grant Morrison, The Comic Conspiracy, will until further notice, be boycotting all future Grant Morrison books. If you want Action Comics, you will have to buy it elsewhere.

Christian comic book readers and shop owners. Join us in the Grant Morrison Boycott. Action Comics #1 is a slap in the face to Superman, Christians and Superman creators Siegel and Shuster!!

I could see Guy Gardner and maybe even Hal Jordan (Green Lanterns) saying it. I could see Oliver Queen (Green Arrow) saying it. I could easily see Damian Wayne (Robin) or MAYBE even Bruce Wayne saying it. But Superman was created to be the “perfect” super-hero. Unblemished. Superman is an American icon.

It grieves me to see a liberal Scottish schmuck like Grant Morrison take these liberties. I’m sorry, Superman would NEVER take God’s name in vain. In the words of the late Jim Croce, “You don’t tug on Superman’s cape.

The story “attitude” didn’t bother me. I’ve had to accept a LOT of changes over my nearly 35 years in the business. However, Superman saying “GD” isn’t going to fly with me.

This wasn’t creative flow. It wasn’t necessary in the story. It isn’t Superman at all. And it goes against a basic Christian principle. It was a blatant stab.

I deal with books like “Crossed” and “The Boys”. I accepted gay characters being introduced into a children specific book like Archie Comics. I however am getting very tired of having comic writer’s liberal agendas force fed to me. Mr. Morrison has stepped over my line. If I have to stand alone on this… I will.
The boycott stands. All orders for Action Comics #2, as well as any other books written by Grant Morrison will be cancelled as soon as Diamond Comics opens it’s offices today. I ask my customers to understand as best they can. I understand that it’s only a comic and it’s not the real world, but I feel that as a Christian I have to draw the line somewhere.
While I respect the owner's right to sell or not sell whatever he wants I think this is just ludicrous. Comics today are full of men and women doing things that are against the bible, yet for some reason the idea of superman saying gd offends him beyond belief. I mean just the way the women are dressed goes against the idea of old school Christian morals surrounding modesty. Comics constantly depict images of violence, murder and revenge all things that are a slap in the face to "Christian Morality", yet for some reason this doesn't offend this store owner.

While reading the comic the idea that Superman was "taking god's name in vain" never even crossed my mind. In my mind it was the sound of Superman getting hit by a train, like his breathe was being knocked out of him. But let's say he was saying God. I grew up as an Orthodox Jew who was taught not to write God just in case the piece of paper was ever disguarded. Throwing god's name in the trash was seen as a sign of disrespect. In order to circumvent this problem we were taught to write G-d or GD as a respectful replacement for God. Based on this logic it would seem that Grant Morrison was attempting to be respectful to this standard. Maybe Clark was saying God but Grant wrote it as gd as a sign of respect for God.

In this man's mind Superman represents the Christian ideal, which to me is very funny. Superman was created by two Jewish guys so i highly doubt that they were trying to create the perfect Christian specimen. Superman isnt perfect. He strives to be perfect but he is still human (well a kryptonian raised as human but close enough). It is his constant striving to do the right thing that makes him superman. In this guy's mind Superman is meant to represent only HIS ideal of what an American icon is. This isn't the 1950's anymore. The world has changed! Morrison is writing Superman to reflect the new American status quo while still maintaining what makes the Man of Steel such an iconic figure. Morrison definitely didn't go out of his way to blatantly take a stab at this guys deity and to think that he did is just self centered self indulgence.

Ok, first up, Kon, we need a little editing in there, for half a second I thought *you* were boycotting Action Comics...

But yeah, I'm with you - this guy's welcome to his opinion, but he's woefully misinformed about Superman (if you need some more counter arguments, there's a lot of Moses in Superman, as well as Golem folklore).

Just finished read Action Comics #1, most faithful to Shuster & Siegel comic in ages.

The only victims here are this guy's customers, and one would hope that there would be a resulting shift in where they choose to buy their comics.

I mostly feel bad for other NC retailers, like the beautiful and wonderful Lord Retail of Acme Comics, who is really upset that people will think this one goof-canoe is indicative of NC comic fans in general.

Only stupid people will think that. More likely, NC comic fans will just look around for the next store over, and hopefully find a good one.

I find it really funny that this guy puts up with the book about the Child-raping sociopath saving the world from Rape-Zombies because RAPERAPERAPERAPERAPE, but Superman saying "GD" pushes him over the edge.
