Marvel chose to make this a huge thing, though, while they didn't with Cap or Ultimate Wolverine. Bucky was just sort of the natural choice to slip into it. In this case, Marvel got everyone talking before we knew anything about the character by turning it into a big media event, with the character's race being a big talking point, in terms of how groundbreaking it was. If it was a white male, I doubt they would have bothered to do a massive media rollout like this.

90% of the reactions I've seen from actual relevant sources has been positive, but something like this will always bring out the CHUDs.

Luke Cage was replaced as Power Man by a Dominican hero, so i'm not sure what you mean.

That's okay. Because it wasn't a white guy. Somehow if a white man takes over for a hero of color it's racist. But it's progressive if a hero of color takes over for a white guy.

I know. It's fucking stupid.

It shouldn't matter if someone wants to pick up the mantle of a fallen hero if that successor is white, spanish, black, asian, female, gay, transgendered, etc. It should matter that they are trying to honor a fallen hero and carry on their legacy.

But again this world is fucked in the head.

It wouldn't be racist, but it would be disappointing. In a perfect world where there were already a fairly even amount of non-white characters, it wouldn't be a problem because there'd be plenty of other non-white representation in the comic world.

But that's not how it is. Right now, non-white, non-hetero characters are vastly underrepresented and losing a role to a white character means more underrepresentation.
