Thread: Okay, About Secret Six

    Gail,
I'm not adding anything new to the mix, but you wrote the best "superhero" book on the stands, and it will be dearly missed. Much love to Calafiore and everyone else involved with the book, also. Clearly the books I like and the books DC Comics fans like are not the same. On the plus side, pretty soon DC won't publish anything I want to read at all, and I can stop caring about the whole enterprise.

I'm happy you got to make this crazy ass book called Secret Six. For some reason I loved Cheshire's appearances. She's one damned psycho hot mess. It was a fun read. Sad it's gonna be gone, but you did good work. Looking forward to the new books. Much success and well wishes.

Oh man, I forgot about this big dramatic moment, all leading to Ragdoll crawling up out of the toilet.

Gail, thank you for writing the best on-going superhero book for the last 3 years and, in my opinion, the best monthly outside of Vertigo. Each issue has been an absolute joy to read; it was the only book that really made me want to go to the comic book store in the middle of the week instead of waiting for the weekend - I just HAD to read it no matter how busy I was.

What strikes me is the enormity of you and your team's achievement. Like what you've pointed out, this was a team of nobodies - Catman was the most prominent person on the cover of Villains United 6. CATMAN. Yet, over the course of 1 issue, I instantly cared about these lovable, deranged and complex freaks. I have read through some incredibly deranged, dark and incredibly disturbing stuff through the course of the series, and I loved every single panel, every single line of dialogue.

I predict that the series will be remembered in the same way Gotham Central is remembered - as a series cancelled too soon, but undoubtedly brilliant all the way.

Thank you Gail and the Secret Six team

    Re: Okay, About Secret Six

I read the most recent issue today and it really moved me; Jeanette moved me to tears.

I question, often, how I can like these people. I am pleased there are no easy answers and that that tension remains even as the team appear to be acknowleging their relationship with one another and finding their centre. It's a fine line to walk: the tension isn't only there for the characters, it's there for the reader. There's a constant fear the story will pitch too far one way or another: that the six will either finally alienate the reader through their actions, or because the story fails to visit the team with the repercussion of their actions. Which may seem strange given the horrific things they do, but I cast my mind back to the elseworlds story you told with them, set in the American West, and I think about cowboy films, and samurai films, and it feels as if they are very much in that tradition.

I could see the writing on the wall, on the page, for once. And as sad as this news makes me, I am glad the title is being treated with respect. It's a really fantastic story: I don't think I will ever stop thinking about these characters. Thank you to everyone involved.

I loved this issue. I was often surprised how much I loved it. At how right it felt. I look forward to walking the tightrope with you, and with them, just a little while longer. Thank you Gail.

    Gail,
I know a lot of other people are saying the same basic stuff here, but I still feel compelled to say a few things, particularly, thanks for the great book. I quit reading comics during the mid-90s, partially because of declining quality and partially because I was entering my teens and suddenly became too cool for comics. Then, a couple of years ago I decided that I wanted back in. When my wife asked what I wanted for our anniversary, I said to take me to the local comic shop and let me pick out a couple of things. As I perused the shelves, I saw the cover of Secret Six #10. I recognized Bane and Deadshot from when I was younger and the cover looked cool, so I picked it up. I came back to the store later that day to start a pull-list, which at that point solely consisted of SS, and to pick up back issues of the series, which of course led me back to the SS mini and Villains United, as well.

It's been the one constant on my ever fluid pull-list ever since. No matter how much other books started to lose my interest or how tight my budget has gotten, Secret Six has been the one book I can't live without. It's the only DC book I still get at this point. Because of the diverse cast and the way that you write each character with such a distinct voice and consistently keep things entertaining, it's hard not to love these characters. No matter how horrible the things they may do are, you still make them characters that we care about. For example, as a new dad and someone who has a troubled family history with his own dad, the "Cat's in the Cradle" arc was pretty emotional for me, which isn't something most people would expect when the story is dealing with a somewhat sociopathic super villain.

I've recommended this book to everyone I know every chance I've gotten. I could keep going on, but I think you probably hear this enough to know the rest of the story. I'm sorry to see it go, but I'll follow you wherever you go. You've got a fan for life in me. Here's to a great final arc and some great stories with new characters in the near future. I'll see you on the other side of the universal reset.
