I've met a couple in my time and it's always surprising to me. How does one reach adulthood and not learn to read and write competently?

My cousin is married to a guy she graduated high school with that can't read or write. She's tried teaching him, but I don't think he's every learned. It's quite strange.

Not for sure really, I don't see them that much these days. He's has some dead-end factory job, and she handles all of the bills and such. End of the day, probably not, he's made it this far why bother?

Both my grandmothers.

They were born and raised in Indian villages back in the 30s and 40s.

Educating women wasn't seen as a priority back then.
