Are you British or Scottish? Make up your mind.

Oh and if were going to bring Dethklok into this, though really they're not nearly Mithril enough. We might as well do this properly or the closest thing to it.

You do realise that people from Scotland, England, Wales and Northern Ireland are British citizens (although Northern Ireland is not in Britain but part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland plus people there have the option of being British, Irish or dual citizens)

As far as nationality, I'm Scottish AND British. Just think of the UK as being a set of states with limited national status. It would be similar to New York, Texas, California and the like having recognition as countries but still being part of the USA.

Can you vote for Tony Blair or whoever is in charge of the UK or just local elections?

Politics work as follows in Scotland.

I have an MP (Member of Parliament) who sits in the House of Commons which is the UK parliament in London which covers all the UK. I also have an MSP (Member of the Scottish Parliament) who sits in the Scottish parliament in Edinburgh which deals with issues specific to Scotland apart from some issues which are dealt with only in London. The other level of politicians are councillors which sit on the Council. Four of those represent my town and the small village next to it. I can contact any or all of those in regard to local issues.

Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland and London all have their own parliaments (only Scotland) or assemblies (the others) which deal with a lot of legislation. the Scottish parliament has stronger powers than the others and can make laws, while the others can't really do this. Scotland has a distinct legal system, while England and Wales share almost every law and Northern Ireland shares most of the England and Wales system with a few differences, including some anti-terrorist legislation and laws on abortion which are far stricter than on the mainland.

The four nations system is pretty similar to having semi-autonomous states like in the USA or Spain. The parliament in London is basically a federal government with the national assemblies and parliament being the state governments.

I should also point out that elections on the UK are decided on the number of MPs that each party has.

If a party have more than half the seats then they win outright and can put their leader in as Prime Minister otherwise they have to make a formal or informal agreement to gain enough votes to have their leader made Prime Minister.

What happened at the last General Election here was that the Conservative Party had too few seats to govern alone and the current Prime Minister was allowed to retain power until agreement had been reached between the Conservatives and Liberal Democrats to share power and that meant that Labour were ousted.

David Cameron of the Conservative Party is the current leader btw.

You can't vote directly for the leader then, only the Member of Parliament for your area but the number for each party decides the leader.
