That's a legalistic way of putting it. A more accurate way to put it is we're applying the principle that this forum does not exist in a vacuum. It's not a rule or policy, it's a concept: we don't need or want assholes here. If you're an asshole on Facebook, you're an asshole, and we don't need you.

We don't need anyone who thinks they have to behave and conform here and can be an asshole everywhere else. We want people who are naturally decent and behave without having to worry about whether they are toeing the line.

There are people here who have posted for years without ever even having to think about what the rules permit. They are generally the smartest, most interesting and most popular participants.

If you find yourself worrying a lot about whether you are over the line, you are doing it wrong.

The rule is "Don't BE a dick." It's not "don't act like a dick." It's not "don't pretend to not be a dick." It's not "hide your dick tendencies." It's "don't BE a dick." So don't be one. If you are a dick, knock it off and learn to not be one.
