Desire, arguably, from Sandman, is depicted as both and neither.
My sequentials are too weak, it'd probably be a novel. I'm weak on plot, though I know the characters.

Are webcomics in or not? There's a few good ones about Trans people, though most are either finished or dead by now.
Dead:
Venus Envy. Dead at the climax of the storyline, ironically. Takes about 2 months for the plot to show up, but a really good read once it gets going.
DAR. Great journal comic, but more than a bit odd. I recommend it, but not for everyone.
Still going:
Skin Horse. Urban fantasy starring a talking dog, a half-black zombie, and a crossdressing psychiatrist. They fight crime.
Misfile. Utterly wonderful.
There are a variety of others where LGBT characters star, but it plays a more minor role in their character(Ragamuffin, Erfworld, etc), but I left those aside for the moment, as well as some which seem a bit too casual for this topic(EGS etc) or the outright pornographic(Sexy Losers, Ghastly's Ghastly Comic).
Sadly, I don't read many with strong gay MALE characters. Not sure why, but if there are a lot of webcomics out there with those characters, I never stumble onto them.
Might've been in the 90s that Vertigo did a mini called Chiaroscuro about the life (and loves) of Leonardo da Vinci. Da Vinci liked the fellas and it plays a fairly big role in the story - which happens to be very good, making this one of the more overlooked Vertigo outings. They put it out as a trade sometime in the 2000s.
I vaguely remember that.
Here's Leonardo showing his narcissistic younger lover the statue, David:
