Or maybe Morrison would have gone the other direction and let us play alternate universe versions of the big characters.
See... Now that would rock. Start with a DCU hero and then distort them until you have a fleshed out alternate version of them.
I had a late night revelation that my tax refund, which I estimated several months ago, has been completely outside my budget for this year and so I broke down and decided to at least give the game a whirl for a month. For every negative, there were buried things I actually really loved.
Plays like a console? Okay. I like console gameplay even though I don't own one and I have come close to buying Arkham Asylum many times, although I wished it was a Superman game.
Limited color scheme? I wish it was 5 instead of 3 colors but I do find characters stop looking like truly ICONIC comic book characters with too many colors. Plus, I tracked down a walkthrough of character creation and it's better than City of Heroes at launch.
The graphics I saw looked breathtaking and had almost no clipping/distortion/painted-on elements. The only other MMO that comes close for me is Star Trek Online and the men's hair looks lousy there and you do have a ton of clipping with the sliders; as long as DCU comes out with pre-scaled bodies of various types, I think you'll see the best of both worlds.
I think what pushed it over into the "buy" column for me were two things though:
- Seeing the male "kid" bodytype and the more super-hero-y costumes. It's like Damian Wayne or Impulse before he grew up. I just felt instinctively drawn to make a flying little kid, kinda like Silver-Age Superboy. That kind of character is just fun for me and I want to make him as much of an animated little goofball as possible.
- I caught a clip of Summer Glau in an ad for the cape. She's Supergirl in this. And then I started thinking about the whole cast. Will Wheaton as Robin, Dwight Schultz as Barry... Only bit of casting I'm not crazy about is Adam Baldwin as Superman. And it's nothing to do with politics or Gail's run-ins with him or his talent as an actor. I enjoy the heck out of him. I just really prefer a more introspective Superman than I feel he's portrayed before. Now, if they'd gotten Kyle MacLachlan... I'd be thrilled. (Maybe as Kal-L? Heck, they got the Legion in here and I hear there are tons of Crisis nods.)
We'll see if I stick with it. I think they did an admirable job with a modern and iconic DCU but I almost kinda wish they'd gone to Grant Morrison to dream up the game. I know he loves consulting on video games and I think he would have made the player characters into more lovable losers who rise to the occasion, which I'd have preferred to the approach they're marketing where they encourage you to make knockoffs.
Or maybe Morrison would have gone the other direction and let us play alternate universe versions of the big characters.

I'm down, just tell me where to be!

OTOH, I discovered that the game DOES allow me to play obscure DC Comics character and former Suicide Squad member "Grant Morrison," though!
I just created "Grant Morrison" as a villain character on New Frontier.
I will have both version of the game sent to me on Friday. I will probably play on my pc, while my son and hubby will likely play on the PS3.
So I think that will be a lot of fun!
That sounds good to me...Heroes on New Frontier, everyone?

Now offering frequent flier miles on the emergency teleporters and proud sponsors of the new Metropolis General Hospital ER wing.
I played in the beta, I liked it enough although I find the story a bit odd. How does one "steal" Batmans "powers" and give them to another? Or magic for that matter...
My other nit was my bow hero taking like 20 roinds to the chest. Sure superman can but not green arrow.
Glad to see the dc jerks and villains and they story stuff was great.
I'll prob pick it up soonish and glad to see a league being built
