My theory (Which, of course, is the one you all need to pay attention to), is that M'gann went a little bit dark only after the break-up.
The impression I had was that Conner broke up with M'gann because he believed that it would be bad for her to stay in a relationship with him (A "I'll only hold you back" kind of thing). After that she thought that she had to "grow up" (I can easily picture part of the breakup being Conner lambasting her for trying to live in a sitcom, which he had brought up in "Terrors" before they became a couple) and so stopped trying to live by the "childish" resrictions of "No, killing, no harming, etc."
