Fascinating look at the pitch process for writing the early episodes!
I never knew The Simpson's was written by Conan O'Brien, some people I've never heard of, and one freakishly tall Asian guy.
That's Richard Sakai, one of the producers, who popped up as a Karaoke singer in one episode. I remember in an interview, when Conan was auditioning for The Late Show they wrote in a joke with Conan doing a talks show with Bart..... which was written before he actually got the jobConan's sister Jane also wrote for the Simpsons, and later Futurama.
Interesting to hear about the roundtable writing process.
I was pretty much aware of this (I have a friend who's such a Simpsons nut that he was pretty darn close to proposing a PhD project on the show, but he sold out to do American literature), but it's a great reminder of how excellent the Simpsons used to be.
"Ah, morality. The last bastion of a coward." - Col. Ives
"You are what you love, not what loves you." - Donald Kaufman
...
"Deserve's got nothing to do with it." - William Munny
"Well He can shove His law up His a@$$, if just one word of it says I can't stand by my friend." - Jesse Custer
"Hey villain. You are history!" - Alan Scott
The breakdown of the actual episode was also incredibly fascinating. Especially reading the first draft and thinking about what was cut.
Although, it may be a touch sad that I haven't seen that particular episode in years, but I know it well enough to recognize how different the final product was from the first draft.
62 page scripts for a 22 minute show? Ay, Caramba!
I sooooo miss that era of the show.
oops wrong thread
I don't if another show has ever had as great of a season as Season 4 of the Simpsons. You had Mr. Plow, Marge vs The Monorail, A Streetcar Named Marge, Kamp Krusty, Homer the Heretic, Krusty Gets Kancelled, etc. So many classic episodes.
