Peter Jackson and New Line Announce 'Hobbit' Casting

It looks dour like LotR which to me would be a fucking travesty. Martin Freeman is awesome and I hope they don't make him play Bilbo, outwardly neurotic yet actually brave and thrill seeking, like what they did with Frodo.

Even though it's a more adventurous novel than LotR, it's still got some pretty dire moments and a lot of infighting among the group. I didn't get "dour" out of the trailer, though, especially not given that the intro of the dwarves made them look as wacky as the Time Bandit dwarves. It looked to me like it was going to be serious in the serious parts, lighter in the light parts. I think I even saw a snippet of Bombur in spider webbing looking all goofy, probably in some scene where his fatness breaks a web or something.

Consider, though: they WANT the audience that made LotR a mega-hit, so they're gonna want this first trailer to echo it. If it seems more like LotR than you expected, I'm gonna bet it's just the smart marketing approach. Adding the stuff from the appendices - especially Gandalf and company investigating "the Necromancer" in Mirkwood - may add some darker moments, but overall I have little doubt there's gonna be some goofy and fun shit with the dwarves and Bilbo.

Film 1 is the Hobbit.
Film 2 is entirely new material telling how Sauron came back into being, the corruption of Saruman and some other nifty things to tie the Hobbit more closely into Fellowship.

It is? I thought they split it up into two films and padded it out with stuff mentioned in the appendices of Lord of the Rings.

Don't worry. We'll get at least 45 minutes of extra movie in the special edition DVD.
