Thread: Gail Simone

  1. #1

    Gail Simone

And here we are. The last thread in the series, and could it be about any other creator?

Gail Simone, the most awesome figure in comics, who has done so many great stories that I will be surprised if people can pick just one as a favourite. But still I must ask, what do you like best about her writing? Favourite works? Least favourite?

I myself must say that Gail's unique blending of humour and action and drama make for some of the best stories Ive ever seen and secret six and agent x are two of the best comics ever.

Thank you all for reading this series of threads. The reason I did it was to count down until Fan Expo Canada, but I might do another series of threads at some point in the future.

and thank you for getting me into FreakAngels in a round about sort of way.

And I adore Secret Six and some of her Wonder Woman run.

She is able to seamlessly blend in drama, action, comedy and character development in all her books. Has the superpower of not working with a bad artist or rather an artist whose work doesn't lend itself to the comic book medium.

She also writes the sexiest trinity of all time and no I'm not talking about Oracle, Black Canary and Huntress but rather my boys, Creote, Josh and Savant!

With the exception of Wonder Woman, I've liked pretty much everything I've read by her. Secret Six is consistently one of the best books DC puts out, and so far, the first four issues of BOP have been stellar as well. I like the All-New Atom too.

Now Wonder Woman was a mixed bag. The more self contained stuff like the Wonder Woman: The Movie storyline and the cage fighter two-parter with Black Canary were awesome. I even liked the Circle, which is one of my personal favorite WW stories.

But the Rise of the Olympian and Warkiller were both crap. ROTO was far too drawn out, and as a whole, Achilles and his army are severely limited in what they can do in the DCU.

I think a weakpoint in Gail's body of work is that she doesn't do so well with crossovers unless it is an in-book crossover separate from the rest of the DCU.

    Re: Gail Simone

By far my favorite comic book writer, I've been a fan since she started writing BoP and I'm thrilled beyond words that that title is back (though I do hate that we lost her on WW for it!)

Gail has a knack for finding voices for characters and excels at making these four color, two-dimensional people into individuals who have their good times and bad, who are grim and humorous and who grow with each story. She turns costumed metas into human beings who the readers can relate to, and gives characters, both heroes and villains, real depth and motivations for their actions.

She brings supporting characters to life, from the unexpected gorilla knights to a hospital nurse (who I sorely miss), and even managed to get me liking Tom Tresser before he left the book. She gives them a reason to be in each panel in which they appear as opposed to just being plot devices or innocent bystanders for the heroes to rescue.

And somehow she's managed to make a group of villains, some of whom I never cared for under the pens of other writers, into likeable characters. I hated Bane in Batman but adore him in Secret Six, and I never in my wildest imaginations ever thought I'd be able to sympathize with someone like Rag Doll. As I said in another thread, I've been scared off of the idea of getting tattoos, but if I ever change my mind, I'm torn between Wonder Woman and Rag Doll.

    Who'd have thunk it?

    She is evil.

Seriously though, if I could name one thing all my favorite writers have in common (whether it's comics, novels, TV, whatever) it's that they are good at blending genres. Nothing they write is easily boxed into a category.

Gail Simone is one of the best in comics at this. She can write something completely hilarious and absolutely tragic, often at the same time (for example: pretty much everything Ragdoll says). She is gifted, and if I am ever critical of any of her comics, it's never because I am comparing it to the works of others, and always because I am comparing it the standard she's set for herself.

Plus she puts gorillas and half naked men in stuff all the time, and I love that crap.

I think Gail is smelly because she is a gurl.

And just because she sometimes writes good in the funny books, doesn't make her less smelly, or less of a gurl.

    GURL!

Seriously Gail, you are a pro. You deserve everything that you have achieved. I'm proud of you and all you've done. Keep rocking sistah!

My favorite is definitely Secret Six, a book where she actually made me care about Bane. Bane! I also have a soft spot for her Deadpool run because turning the Rhino into a key chain was a moment of genius.

My favorite is her Wonder Woman work and I really miss it.
one of the things about Gails writing that is really great is the specificity with she writes her characters.
You find yourself craving the same food they like.
    NowTHATS good writing!
