Yeah, I was about to say...
Wow, this is a big one.
Hopefully you'll like Dan Slott's upcoming run.I've loathed Spider-Man since BND started, and not because of the stupid way they split up the marriage (sorry, selling your soul to the devil is not the action of "the every man" or whatever it is Joe Q keeps calling Peter, that real people can relate to, which again, is something Joe Q keeps telling people. That Peter needs to be relatable). I've hated seeing Peter go from being a smart man, to a pathetic, 20 something loser who if he existed in real life, would have his teeth kicked in by his "friends" faster than his enemies for being the moronic asshole he keeps coming across as.
I believe that writers like Grant Morrison and Warren Ellis need to stick to creator owned work, and need to stay the hell away from existing properties like X-Men. Morrison less so, as long as he sticks with DC, where he seems to have an easier grasp of the characters voice. But Ellis no matter where he goes. Having every character sound like a snarky, sarcastic, smartass prick for no reason is not enjoyable.
I actually really liked Morrison's New X-men. In fact I loved it.
Some more:
-I don't really like Huntress much. I'm not sure what it is.
-Jason Todd is awesome.
-90% of the time politics are just annoying in comics.
-Geoff Johns is better at writing villains than his heroes. Sometimes it feels like his heroes lack very little personality.
-John Byrne is overrated. The only stuff that I thought was really great of his was his Fantastic Four.
-Babs is more interesting in a wheel chair.
-Tim Drake has become a Mary Sue.
-Spider-man 2 is the best comic film ever made.
The Bruce Jones Hulk run could have been the best on the title ever if not for editorial nonsense.
Funnybook of the Week - I read 'em, I rank 'em. Based on nothing more than my personal enjoyment.
Twitter Feed - Just as inane as a blog, but shorter.
Here's mine, seriously now:
DC & Marvel, in general, hurt themselves severely by going to Direct Market exclusively. By taking the books out of the regular stores, they cut their profits dramatically.
Back in 1985, DC should have just rebooted the entire line at the end of Crisis on Infinite Earths. Total clean slate across the board. Basically a new Silver Age.
Continuity should basically be ignored and not so rigid. It causes nothing but problems.
I like Dick Grayson as Batman and have no desire to see Bruce Wayne re-take the cowl. Let him come back, but not as Batman or any other costumed hero.
DC & Marvel need to stop killing off heroes and replacing them with "new kewler" characters. Be creative. Make new heroes. If they're good, they'll sell; if they're not good, then cancel the it.
The floggings will continue until morale improves. ~ anonymous
It tends to be the one that surprises people. But I hate every page so much it gives me energy.
I most likely won't be reading Slott's run. I dropped Spider-Man since the BND crap became too much for me, and while I'm intrigued by Slott's ideas, since for the first time ever, a writer is saying stuff I've been wanting to hear being done in a Spidey book since I was a kid, I'm also not a fan of Dan Slott's writing. Love his ideas, but not his execution.
That's cool. Glad you did. I'm a firm believer in enjoying what you enjoy, everyone else be damnedI, personally, as an X-Men fan my entire life, hated pretty much the majority of Morrison's run. Not all of it, but most. And the stuff with Magneto at the end really irked me.
I agree in that characters who were created for the sole purpose of being replacements rarely take off. However, if they've been a part of the book for a long time, and it feels organic, then I'm all for it. Wally, Bucky, and Jim Rhodes are my favorite characters to have ever donned their heroic identities.
*I loved The Dark Knight Strikes Again. Found it fun, wild and imaginative.
*I was also enjoying All-Star Batman & Robin very much.
*I've never read anything of Alan Moore past the 1990's and I don't think I ever will.
*Top Cow is such an underrated publisher and Witchblade is easily one of THE best female characters in all of comics.
*Comic fans don't want variety in comics. They want the same old, same old. Books like Captain Britain & MI13, Doctor Voodoo, The Web, etc are proof of that.
Also, I forgot:
*Dan Slott and Jeff Parker are two of THE best writers in the industry right now.
*Give me a writer who's a fan and loves the medium and the characters over some genius who'll dazzle me with the depth of his narrative any day of the week.
