I'm pretty split on it really. I would never do pot, but if alcohol is legal, I guess marijuana should be, too.
But for harder drugs, such as Ecstasy, I definitely think that they should be outlawed.
Okay, I don't drink, ever, I've never been drunk, I don't drink coffee, I don't smoke, and I've never done an illegal drug in my life.
And I still think criminalizing marijuana especially is the dumbest thing in the world. It's not a hurtful drug, it doesn't make people violent. Sure there are side effects, but fewer than cigarettes or alcohol.
Things get fuzzier for me with harder drugs. I can't see much benefit in legalizing the hard stuff.
So, what are your opinions? Should this stuff be legal? Why or why not?

nope. It shouldn't be legal.
I've seen it be a gateway (and I know some don't believe that is and I don't want to get into that tired discussion) drug to other more serious narcotics.
Wonder how they would amend the DUI laws for this if it was ever legalized
"Our history suggests it's better to open the road to riches for those Americans than to raid the gold pot at the end of it."
On one hand you have the plus side to legalizing marijuana that it will take a lot of drug dealers out of business. Stuff like coke, heroin, shrooms, LSD, tweek, ect. should NEVER be legalized. Destroys enough people as it is. The problem with legalizing weed is that the guidelines you have to put for it- where you smoke it, because parents are going to have problems with the possibility of their kids getting a contact high.
I'm strongly in favor of legalizing pot. If vodka and smoking are still legal, I don't see much of the issue.
Yeah, it can harm brain cells, but like the other two vices I mentioned, it's up to the consumer to moderate.
No.
Drugs are the worst thing that has happened to society in many years and encouraging them in any way is going to create a movement towards further legalisation in the future and that really can't be allowed to happen.
There has already been a debate in the UK regarding 'legal highs' which led to the ban on mephadrone. That particular drug seems to be fairly dangerous but there has been another drug mentioned in the press which hasn't been banned yet so it is obvious the police and government have to get further up with the latest developments in drug production to get rid of potential threats before they become popular.
Legalize pot, absolutely. Legalize it and tax the hell out of it just like alcohol and tobacco.
Honestly, I think all drugs should be legal. But then, I know I'm kind of a weirdo with that opinion. For me, people should be allowed to make their own decisions, but they should also have to face the consequences of their actions. I don't particularly care for drugs myself, and yes, I've experienced first-hand what having an addict in the family can do to a family. But in the end, everyone needs to own up to what they do. I think there's just too much finger-pointing in our society today, and I think that more than drugs or alcohol is much more detrimental.

"Tell me that a fit fortyish woman with 25+ years of experience at sea and several decades of live bladefighting practice under her belt isn’t a threat when she runs across the deck toward you, and I’ll tell you something in return— you’re gonna die of stab wounds." - Scott Lynch
The idea of pot being this horrible thing is something that one quickly throw away once you get into college, in my experience. Once you meet a guy who smokes a blunt every day and yet still gets better grades than you, it really solidifies that it's less about the blunt, and more about the person smoking it.
Right now, I wouldn't do it--I already feel I'm too lazy for my own good--but if someone wants to do so, go right ahead.
I've smoke pot now and then since I was 15 and it's never made me go on to harder drugs. If I'm out of it, I'm not on the corner scratching my arm and looking for a fix. I wait until I can afford to pick some up and I enjoy it.
I look around at all the unbelievable shit that's out there for someone to abuse and it baffles me to no end that people are so afraid of legalizing weed. This includes food. People abuse it and people die of diabetes brought on by overeating. They sell ads on television where you can buy THE most unhealthy amounts of crap to consume, with 62 oz of soda to wash it down. And that's legal.
Sugar is the gateway drug. It's in everything we eat and McDonald's can't even make something as simple as a french fry without adding it to it. This country has such a problem with food addiction and overeating that we now have game shows featuring obese individuals so huge, they're one-heartbeat away from killing themselves.
And yet nothing is done to regulate it. We're free to eat whatever piece of shit sandwich corporate restaurants can think of shoving down your throat. Kids in schools have health issues from what they're told to eat. And nothing is done.
Everything is a gateway drug. It's not just one thing. A gateway drug is that one thing that got you to escape whatever thing you're trying to get away from. When it quits working, you move on to something else. To say that only pot does this is ridiculous.
I enjoy it. I don't abuse it. I've never driven a car on weed. Never traveled with it. I have a few hits before I create my books in fact. And, again, I've never moved on to cocaine or heroine or LSD. In fact, whenever I hear this argument, it's always from someone who's never smoked weed in their life... but god help us if they don't have their morning coffee in the morning to get through the day. Not everyone who smokes weed are abusing it. It's not even close.
But I'll tell you what I do hate. I hate the fact that the country is bitching about how everyone and everything is financially broke and yet won't take the taxes on that thing I enjoy using and don't abuse. I hate the fact that I have to get it from a guy who knows a guy, which involves a criminal element to it.
In fact, tax revenue is exactly WHY prohibition was lifted in the first place. It wasn't because Americans deserved to have a drink. The religious idiots who forced the ban on drinking didn't suddenly become enlightened and change their mind. It was money... pure and simple. So if that's the reason to allow an American to have a drink now and add their taxes to society then let us have the same right.
