Re: Rick Olney: Still does not pay freelancers or anyone else.

There seems to be some confusion as to how Matt Busch and Rick Olney got together to sell the maps on the Bleedingcool.com forums. As I don't post there a quick rundown for those reading from there.

The original Adirondack ComicFest was supposed to take place in June 2011 as originally stated by Rick in one of his now removed blogs. Matt Busch was supposed to be a guest at that event. However Rick's "local 2 man web team" was unable to create a website in time to promote it so Rick cancelled it before any of us even knew it existed. He then changed the date to November. Matt Busch was unable to attend the planned November convention due to conflicting engagement. So in lieu of Matt appearing, Rick asked him if he would do a new print for charity. Matt was all for this idea.

At the same time this conversation was happening, Matt Busch had after 3 years of work completed the Indiana Jones World Map. He was weighing his options on the various ways he could sell it, be it with a LucasFilm licensees, as a limited art print, a mass produced poster, etc. As Matt thought of what print he could give to Rick to sell, he realized he would not have time to create something new. So Matt Busch then decided that the Indiana Jones map would be perfect because the convention was to benefit military veterans. Rick loved this idea and apparently according to Matt, so did LucasFilm who gave him the go ahead.

As far as I know, we don't have any dates when these conversations took place. However we do know that on July 14, Rick posted an email on his blog from Matt Busch stating that the maps were signed/numbered and ready to be shipped to Rick. It was August 9 that Matt Busch started selling the maps on his website with the mention they were funded by the Adirondack ComicFest. I'm not sure how much it adds to the conversation but I do wish Matt would tell us on what date he sent the 223 maps to Rick. He was aware of the situation with Rick back in August and I'm unsure why he'd send the maps earlier than that for a convention that was not supposed to even happen until mid November.

I can put the links for some of this information if needed, others are lost from the deletion of the blogs.

Re: Rick Olney: Still does not pay freelancers or anyone else.

I saw this last week but didn't want to say anything until I saw if he was going to post anything worth valuable. He's not updating it so this is as good a time as any to mention, Rick opened up his ORCOMX blog 2 weeks ago.

It has been a bunch of months since this blog got updated. Figured now was a good time. We're still actively looking for new members. The few of us still in touch in the ORCOMX group are simply taking it easy under this lousy economy, trying to enjoy our varied reading and collecting interests. So that is why I'm behind in posting covers since our last publicized issue below.

We had a pretty scary Halloween issue this last month, no thanks to me. I got it mailed out later, but you still had it by the 31st. For anyone reading that has dropped off the roster, we had a rather well known writer (wishing to remain anonymous) guested, actually shared a ghost story (which he claims is true) with us, and I'm inclined to believe him.

We had a pumpkin photo contest, and Bev won that one. So if you got my email to check this lazy old blog, then you now know that we're still limping along. Consider crankin' out a fanzine and sending it to me. My address hasn't changed yet, but this next year is going to be very busy for me so we few shall have to think about a *new* Central Mailer in January 2012. Oh! And t-shirts for 2010 and 2011 are STILL available...but not for much longer. So consider becoming 'active' again.

    Thanks for reading!

I may have missed it, but has it been stated anywhere who paid for the print run for the maps? More curious than anything since the initial reports were that it was 'funded' by a non-existent LLC :/

Matt Busch funded the map. Rick was supposed to through his Adirondack ComicFest thing, kept putting it off until eventually Matt paid for it out of his own money.

NotLarry, thanks for the clarification on the sequence of events. I was reading Bleeding Cool last night and it seemed to me that OMAR had a skewed perception. I wasn't entirely sure about how Busch and Olney had connected, but you brought up the specific detais I'd forgotten. Thanks.

Less than the amount of people he owes money to.
Love comics? Love humor? Love hot redheads (of both sexes?)

Off the top of my head, he's had 9 different active blogs in the last 2 years. At the moment, he's just got the one I posted in use.

You're welcome. For years I had to research, provide links and summaries for a volunteer job at AOL. So it comes naturally to me.

I still feel people are being a little hostile to Matt in some of the Bleeding Cool posts. The reason Rick chooses people is BECAUSE they are nice people, because they have generous, trusting natures.

And remember, Matt is far from the only person who believed Rick's bullshit. There's also me, Val Staples, Chuck Dixon, and dozens of others. Part of Rick's con is that you feel bad for him, but you think
he's harmless. I'm sure Matt, like all of us, wishes he'd done things differently. Like all of us, I'm sure he wishes he'd never HEARD of Rick Olney.

But it'll be interesting to see how Rick tries to defend this map stuff. Even in the UK, people were saying how disgusting this behavior is.
