Since the chamber he was breaking out of was supposed to contain the Hulk, and since they made it seem like Thor barely made it out alive at the very last second, (since they also made it seem that Loki, who has some kind of limited translocation/teleportation/image-casting abilities in the movie, couldn't even break out of that chamber), I put that down to both Thor and Mjolnir being temporarily spent, if only for a moment, having depleted all of the demigod's considerable willpower and that of the weapon he uses to focus it. It was almost like the hammer was unresponsive, or just needed a moment, more than it was that Thor couldn't lift it. So we get the sense that the thing could've contained (and destroyed) either Loki or the Hulk.
Which is a long-winded way of saying: To give us the impression that Thor actually was in danger, and had a tough time breaking out of a glass box.
