I dropped this back then due to the artist rotation, it bugs me.
unfortunately i dropped pretty much right before ragnorok which was stupid on my part.
i'ev been re-reading my trades of this and jesus, he had such an amazing story here, but every single issue is drawn by a different artist and sometimes he ends up inserting random oneshots for certain artists.
can someone who read this as it was coming out tell me what you thought of all this? i'm specifically referencing that whole giant asgard on earth storyline around the 50's and 60's.
also the geoff johns avengers' tie in is amazing.

yeah, i bought the trades well after it wrapped up and when i read them, all i could think was that i would have dropped the book if i'd been reading monthly. the thor stuff is amazing but if i had to wait 3 months at a time between installments of the main thor story, i'd lose interest.
and i'm not saying those side stories aren't good. some of them are awesome. it's just that the thor stuff is SO GOOD. it's like when bendis/maleev's daredevil was interrupted by that echo mini series, except with jurgens' thor, it happens every other issue.
i loved this run. the artist rotation did get annoying, and when they settled on garney(i think it was) i never found him to be a great fit. the alan davis drawn crossover is one of my favorite big 3 stories ever made. all the accolades jms gets for his run, i found a lot of it to be a rehash of jourgens'. i do wish they would have done more with the future storyline, i would have loved to see an asgardian/mortal superhero war.
I seem to remember Tom Raney kicking ass on some issues.
I dropped Thor after JRJR left, but I flipped through the Raney issues at my LCS.

I dunno... It seemed like a case of an old-school writer trying to work with new-school ideas and not being entirely successful.
But I suppose a comic where Thor screams at Bush can't be completely bad.
Artist rotation hurt a lot of books around that time. New X-Men (before they went to an artist per-arc), Uncanny (pre-Larocca) and Avengers (post-Perez) all come to mind.

I remember likeing a little bit of that run alot, though there were some awfule artists (like Tom mandrake) but I dropped when it jumped into the future. The two Lai brothers, who drew a few issue, were fantastic and I have no idea what ever happened to them because they coulée been huge, they were great artists. Oh, and the artist of Four Eyes did an issue way back then too.
I remember loving some stories and just liking others. It was a fantastic Thor story over all and I did not mind picking it up monthly. it was definitely different from what else was going on in the Marvel Universe.
I also like the Thor costume at the time, but now I don't really like it. Not sure why my opinion changed.
