I'm with you vegans in spirit, but I can't give up meat. Like it too much.

Just ran across this article on Slate where a vegan argues that eating oysters is okay because they don't feel pain, because you can farm them without harming the environment, and because they pose little threat to other animals when harvested.

What do you all think of his position?

I think he doesn't make much sense.

That's why, as I mentioned earlier, I try not to make a debate out of my vegetarianism.

Who am I? We all just do the best we can. Should I give up one thing that I consider a "good," because all my actions aren't "good?" That's the kind of thought that leads to no positive change at all. I don't feel that make's one a hypocrite. Not that I necessarily think that this what you're saying.
Yeah, it wasn't intended to call anyone out. But these things do interest me. As someone who doesn't care enough about anything to do anything about it, I question the motives of anyone who does.

Not eating bug shellac cause its icky or unhealthy I can see. Not doing it because its "wrong" does seem pretty weird to me.

Yeah, but I don't really care and I'm lazy.

eating oysters would still be a no-go for an ethical vegan because even if it doesn't feel pain, it is a living creature that doesn't deserve to be treated as a "thing". Look at that definition of speciesism again.
