Recommend me some Sci-Fi Short Stories

    Hello All,

I'm looking for your recommendations on sci-fi short stories. A collection would be great of some of the best "current" Short Stories that I could buy through Amazon (I have a gift card).

Please no Fantasy (I.e., Lord of the Rings style) I'm looking for robots, space odysseys, aliens, etc.

If you know of any good short stories published online please forward me a link.

As always thanks for your help.

Larry Niven has many good collections, as does Spider Robinson and Isaac Asimov

Here is one of my faves: A Dry, Quiet War by Tony Daniel (not the comic book one):

Ray FUCKING Bradbury. Illustrated Man or I Sing the Body Electric. Any decent library will have one of them.

Re: Recommend me some Sci-Fi Short Stories

Edited by Harlan Ellison, Dangerous Visions (published in the 60s) still has a reputation as the best original science fiction anthology ever published.

Gardner Dozois has been the acclaimed editor of an annual short-story anthology, and to celebrate the 20th Anniversary, he published The Best of the Best, which lives up to the title. "A Short History of Death" is a masterpiece.

I'd certainly recommend general "Best of" anthologies of the work of Issac Asimov, Phillip K Dick, Harlan Ellison, Robert Heinlein and Arthur C Clarke. Not sure which specific anthologies are the best. Arthur C Clarke's "The Star" is really worth getting in some form, while Robert Heinlein's "All You Zombies" is the craziest take ever on the grandfather paradox.

The Science Fiction Hall of Fame is an astounding collection of the classics from 1929-1964. It includes many of the all-time great science fiction stories and gets my highest possible recommendation. The absolute best stories in that collection would be Issac Asmiov's "Nightfall," Theodore Sturgeon's "Microcosmic God," Murray Leinster's "First Contact" and Tom Godwin's "The Cold Equations."

The Best Sci-Fi of 2009 will be shelved with other sci-fi anthologies at most book stores.

Edit: Amazon. No searching the bookshelves!

Good one volume sf anthologies that cover the last twenty years are:

As for the "big" and a couple of newer annual sf anthologies we have:

    - The Year's Best Science Fiction ed. by Gardner Dozois

    - Year's Best SF ed. by David G. Hartwell and Kathryn Cramer

    - The New Space Opera ed. by Gardner Dozois & Jonathan Strahan

    - Science Fiction: The Best of the Year ed. by Rich Horton

    - The Solaris Book of New Science Fiction ed. by George Mann

    - Eclipse ed. by Jonathan Strahan

    - Fast Forward ed. by Lou Anders
