    Official '09 - '10 NHL Thread

Alright, Taxman's been whining about this loudly enough recently that I've decided to try and reintegrate the NHL in my life.

    [Obligatory Personal Aside]
As a kid on Long Island, I grew up during the Messier/Graves/Leech era of Rangers hockey - one of the earliest memories I have are of a "Fan Night" where I had a picture taken with John Vanbiesbrouck, and got Adam Graves autograph. We moved to Tampa during the '93 season, and I missed a lot of the action during the strike-shortened '94 season; really only catching games when the playoffs started. (I still have memories of listening to the Finals during a car ride back home to visit.) After a few years of living in Florida, I never lost my love for the Jets or the Mets, but I gradually parted with the Rangers over the past 15 years. It was just impossible at the time to get much hockey news down here - even when the Lightning won the cup, there was little commotion from people around here. My last major memory watching Hockey was seeing the Avalanche beat the Panthers in a third overtime of game four of the finals.

Anyway, I had a phone conversation with my 7 year old nephew the other night where he told me how excited he was that he got a Gaborik jersey for Christmas. After a few seconds of pure silence where I struggled to figure out who he was talking about, I decided that I want to revive my love for Hockey. I've tried in the past, but always late in the season.[/Obligatory Personal Aside]

So, for the remainder of the season, I'll be following the Rangers as they try and keep their position in the Eastern Conference, and I invite you guys to help me along in re-learning the game.

Also, I don't give a shit if this whole thread is me and Taxman talking back and forth. I'm sticking this out through the Cup Finals.

(After all, I need something to do between the Jets being punted out of the playoffs and another disappointing Mets season starts.)

So, one of the things I've noticed from watching the Rangers - Bruins tonight is that the game feels a whole lot faster than it did when I was a kid. Somehow less brutal, and more finessed. I guess this is a side-effect of a mostly European player base now a days? Have there been any major rules changes in the last few years that have speed up the game?

Also, the announcers for Versus are boring as shit.

Most of the change has to do with all the new rules after the lockout season. Definitely freed up the skill players and quickened the pace of the game. Also no more two line passes to clog up the neutral zone. Lots of other stuff but you get the idea.

As a long time Devils fan I look forward to seeing this thread grow and will gladly participate.

I've got Direct TV so Versus isn't on my TV anymore. But I do have Center Ice......

It was more of an observation, or a taunt, than whining.

But I will use this as an excuse to repost my game pics. I was bummed that I forgot my camera, but these with the phone did not turn out too bad.

I was pretty fired up to get a pic of the puck in the net.

This was my first game in about 15 years and the first game my sons had ever been to. They both enjoyed it a lot.

It was a pretty exciting game. The Kings were down two goals in the third and tied it up in the final two minutes. The Wild scored the winning goal in the beginning of the King's goal announcement.

It's WHINING! You bumped last year's thread!

I'm having a ton of fun watching the game tonight. I forgot how much I enjoyed the quick pace of hockey.

I caught a Lightning/Thrashers game at the St Pete Times Forum a few years back, but I'd love to see another live game (especially if tickets for the Lightning are nearly as cheap as Rays tickets.)

Nice pic of the puck going in!

I just found out about these "Ice Girls" this year. That's a pretty cool program if you ask me.

Appreciate the heads up. It was the first thing I noticed, the pace is so much faster, players aren't idling in the contested zone with constant passes, and it's all back and forth now.

I noticed they mentioned games broadcast over the web (when not in blackouts,) is that a free service, or is that Center Ice?

Oh no Center Ice is not free. Not by a mile. In fact I waited until after the first so the price would drop. But they gave me the first month free so that was cool.

And neither is the broadcasting game sover the web. NHL.com has that service but I never looked into it much.

Since you live in an NHL city, you have no excuse. Once the Kings got Gretzky, we went to at least one playoff game every year. The year they went to the Cup Finals, we went to a game in each round, including game six of the Conference Finals. Toronto had a chance to win 4 games to 2, and it went to overtime for the Kings to win. It was freakin' awesome.
