Elliot Serrano's interview on Wordballoon

As a person who enjoys both John's interviews and Elliot's Comicsculturewarrior youtube channel I thought this was a really fun and good episode. The most interesting parts for me though were of John and Elliot's take on events and on Bendis' comics.

Elliot had at an earlier point in time during his CCW show said that Brian Bendis was a misogynist due to stuff like the Tigra beatdown in New Avengers, the Queen Veranke kill shot in Secret Invasion, female skrulls getting shot in the head and well.... lets just say that most are referenced in these videos:

I'm not saying that I neccessarily agree with Elliot and Jose given that Brian writes female characters particularly well in Alias, Jinx, Ultimate Spider-Man (Aunt May, MJ, Gwen), New Avengers etc., but I could understand their perspective and always find their viewpoints very interesting both in negativity and positivity.

I'm also not sure if I agree with Elliot's "DC Zombies" thing with regards to Blackest Night but the story in some ways does serve as the horror aspect of the DCU getting the big event boost like Marvel did with Marvel Zombies which, while not an event, still sells in the bucket loads.

i enjoyed talking to elliott too, and don't share his view on bendis being a woman hater.

doom calling ms marvel a whore wasn't much of an example.

it reminded me of the bs brad meltzer got about identity crisis.

I think Elliot puts up a bunch of other examples and makes a good case but ultimately I agree with you that I don't think that's Brian's intention. By the way great reverse interview with Elliot on Geek To Me!

I have seen the other vids where El & Jose give theiur examples of Bendis hating women, and mstreating them...sorry I still don't buy it, given the way Brian has equally treated male heroes and villians through violent and emasculating ways.

These stories aren't meant to be read by nine year olds, and I don't think they are being sold to them.

This isn't 1979, comics aren't 35 cents, and aren't being sold at every corner drug store like they were when I was a kid.

Well, as I said John I agree with you.

On another note, I do think that DC and Marvel have upped the use of blood and gore considerably enough to the point where it's starting to bother me in their superhero comics especially with books that don't carry any rating.

I think it's especially evident in DC and in Geoff Johns' comics (although not all of them).

I think his view point is totally ridculous if I am honest. How many male characters has he killed? Was the scene with Tigra any more the violent than the scene with Kingpin at the beginning of his run on Daredevil?

They're using quotes from misogynist characters like Dr. Doom and Norman Osborn to prove their point. If Bendis was truly misogynist would he use the villains, the guys who have a warped world view, to express those beliefs? Would he not use Peter Parker?

They think that kids are going to grow up and think it's cool to call women whores because Dr. Doom does it. Do kids think that way? "Captain America treats women with respect, but all he represents is hope, freedom and equality; that's not really me. No, I relate more to the Eastern European dictator who is trying to cripple mankind and take over the world. He's the one I want to emulate."

Norman Osborn kills the Skrull Queen and this ushers in the darkess era in Marvel history, right? So a man violently killing a woman leads ultimate evil. If the skrull queen had not been killed, put instead arrested and placed in jail the world would be a better place, the world would be a better place if violence against a woman hadn't taking place. And they walk away from that thinking he hates women. That doesn't make sense.

Does he respond to this in the next installment of the Bendis tapes?
