    Absolutely.

And not for nothing, but what we have seen of Prometheus thus far looks like it might find a nice median between the two. It will be amazing if it is successful in that.

This was by far the biggest atrocity committed in Alien 3:

To me, Aliens is a crucial component to the franchise. Alien was an intimate, claustrophobic horror film. A small group fighting to survive against a single threat.

Aliens took that and blew it up to larger proportions. "Holy Fuck! There's thousands of 'em!" It made the world bigger, and the threat greater than ever, and opened the door to more story possibilities.

If the second movie had repeated the original film's formula, that would have been boring. (See Halloween, Halloween II)
I never felt any fear or suspense. But that may have just been the Bill Paxton vacuum. I understand the appeal of the movie, it just never reached me. It became too over-the-top, when I like the claustrophobic, intimate (like you stated) setting.

It's interesting to watch the extended version of Alien3 (some, although not all, of the problems stem from the hatchet job that was done on it after Fincher was out of the picture) and the making-of documentary (in which it becomes clear that bad as the movie might have been, it is miraculous it was as good as it was).

Feeling a little perturbed I'm watching the game and during commercial break a new Prometheus tv spot comes on and has major plot spoilers. My jaw kind of fell open and thought WTF. I've been trying to stay away from anymore spoiler ridden info so I can enjoy the movie and then this. Those bastards. Even though the spoiler was something I had guessed at.

I still love the wooden planet monastery idea.

I finished watching 3 last night. I don't know if it's just that my expectations were so low, but I kind of enjoyed it. Nowhere near as good as the first two, but not the abomination that I heard it made out to have been.

I've been listening to the Fuzzy Typewriter Podcast's analyses of the films and for 3 they've been talking about the development process and all of the earlier drafts that sound far more interesting than what ended up getting shot. I printed out the Wooden Monastery one. I'm excited to read it.
