Spoilers( Do they Ruin or Help a Story)

This question I came up with during the graveyard shift at my job.

Did the bootleg ofthe Wolverine movie that got release cost the studio money or guaranteed that all the fanboys get to see it

It costs the studio money in some regards - some people who would have paid money to see it have now downloaded it and will not go see it. There are others who have seen a downloaded version but will pay to see it in theaters, and those who have only seen trailers and are waiting to see it in the theater.

In a way any publicity is good publicity, however you have to wonder what the true intent of those who leaked this onto the web really were. I'm fairly certain there is no concrete right or wrong answer here - I know plenty of fanboys who won't see a downloaded version, and know of many others who will see a movie at whatever cost.

Another question to ponder about the Wolverine movie is will it still perform once Star Trek hits?

Normal spoilers usually help rather than hurt. However, the Wolverine bootleg cost the developers alot of money. Many people who downloaded the movie won't go to the theater. I just hope they can make their money back in DVD sales.

I'm not convinced of this at all. First of all, it wasn't a bootleg, it was a workprint. The difference is that a workprint is unfinished.

I think the number of fans who have by even today been told to steer clear of the film by people who saw it last night far outweighs the few thousand at most who saw a half-finished film a month ago and decided they'll not see the complete thing...

...although I'll concede it probably shifted viewership towards DVD rental more than at the Box Office.

But honestly, the rule for about a decade has been that a film will make its money back on 1. Combined global box office and 2. Home video.

Overall, I think the numbers have shifted more than they have dropped.

Let me answer the question in general, now. I have a friend who is a spoiler junkie. He knows everything he possibly can about the plot and major events of a story before he reads it.

I can NEVER EVER understand that mentality: Why go through the process of reading something if you know 95% of what will follow?

I have never understood how spoilers are a good thing. It ruins or takes away some of the enjoyment of what you are about to see or read. Teasers are okay, that piques an audiences interest, but spoilers suck. For me, I want to experience it for the first time without any preconceived notions. It gives me a pure enjoyment for a story.

I mean, you can't imagine the stuff he says. Stuff like "#$%^knuckle" or "Monkey #($*%&^%!" Oh and then there's "Your Mother's @#$%^% cystic #$%^%!" I mean who thinks of these things?"-Joe Quesada
