Star Trek, Farscape & The Final Frontier, With Keith RA DeCandido

    Excellent episode, John!

As a (former?) Trekkie, I liked all the talk about the Trek Pocket books.

I have to confess I haven't been following them for the last decade.

The last one I remember reading was the Kahless book and liking it very much and I remember buying the firs two books in the Invasion! tie-in series but never reading them!

So anyone who cares: Feel free to recommend me some titles or series since 1996.

    Hi there! I'm new here.

I think that the last several years have seen a real renaissance in Star Trek novels, especially in the sense of having a real inter-novel continuity and in being able to do books that go beyond the things we've seen in the TV series and movies. As I've said elsewhere, this seems like the kind of thing that comics fans should really be receptive to, since inter-title continuity and crossovers and things like that are all things that most of us are used to.

Bearing all of that in mind, I'd unhesitatingly recommend any book by Keith DeCandido, in particular his recent NEXT GEN novel "Q & A" and the "non-denominational" Trek books ARTICLES OF THE FEDERATION (mentioned in the podcast) and A SINGULAR DESTINY, which follows up on the recent crossover trilogy DESTINY, by David Mack (whose books are similarly excellent).

    Other authors I'd recommend are:
    Dayton Ward & Kevin Dilmore
    Christopher L. Bennett
    David R. George III
Michael A. Martin & Andy Mangels
    Margaret Wander Bonanno
    James Swallow
    Greg Cox

I'd also recommend A.C. Crispin and Howard Weinstein (though they haven't written any Trek for awhile now). I'd be more specific, but without knowing what your Trekian (?) preferences are, I'd hesitate to recommend any one series over another.

    Hope this helps!

ETA: And I agree, John - great episode, and I hope you do go out and track down some of those books (especially ARTICLES).

I remember A.C. Crispin. Can't say the same for Weinstein.

Again, keeping in mind that I haven't touched Trek book in a dozen years, almost all those authors are new names to me.

I guess they really did proceed with the model established in Invasion! after all.

I have to say back then, the Voyager books were rather weak, the DS9 were surprisingly good but that I'd read any Trek book at this point.

Glad for the recommendations so far, and welcome to the board. I'll remember to read those first two DeCandido books first, when I have the time.

I've liked a number of TNG books and the DS9 ones. Right now no titles are popping into my head.

So any thoughts on the new movie?

Cool. I thought it was okay, mostly on the stengths of the actors. Sadly I felt no tension or suspense during any of the action scenes. After sitting down and thinking about the movie, I like it less and less.

Hey John, how was Q&A? I just listened to this podcast last week (and again yesterday) and it got me interested in the current landscape of the Trek universe in the novels. I never really looked into it and I'm glad to know there's a lot of stuff after Nemesis.
