what do I tell her?

Okay, so background first this girl I was kind of internet dating has had the shittiest year ever. Her grandfather was diagnosed with aggressive cancer and was only given about 4 months to live. Thanks to her and her mother's constant supervision, the cancer went into remission last week and to celebrate the mother and grandfather went back to the old farm in Puerto Rico this weekend.

So this is the email I got this morning

So long story short my aunt, her husband and adult children, my
estranged brother and grandmother all went to Puerto Rico and sold my
grandfather's farm with acres of land, animals, truck, and everything
that wasn't nailed down in his home. They also stole 5,000.00 dollars
in cash he has saved up in his house and closed down and took
80,000.00 dollars from his bank account. His entire life savings.
Everything he had worked for was taken.

Please, please, please tell me that there is more to family and life
and loving someone unconditionally than this, because I just can't see
a point in loving anyone anymore. For the first time in my life I am
completely heartbroken and feel more alone than I ever thought
possible.

and this is what I said back to her.

That is not love. That is greed. Your family does not understand love, and it will come back to them when they are old. It's because of people like this you have to love. You have to show the people of the world like this that you don't care what they do or how they live or try to hurt you. You're making your stand and saying NO I know what's right. I know what is good and right and proper. And if you can only let things like money into your heart I don't care because I have and know more than that.

Their lives are shallow and meaningless. But yours is so much better. I know, I KNOW, that you have kept your grandfather alive with your love and caring for him. Please don't give up on it. Please. Nikki, when I get to talk to you, I can feel your love over half a world away. Please don't lose it over something as trivial as money.

We never REALLY dated so much as have just been there for each other. I can't believe her family are such amazing assholes. But yes, what comforting things can I tell her?

that is some impossibly horrible shit to do to a person.

i'm probably the last person to pony up some inspirational advice, mostly due to the fact that i'm a cynical prick, but i think what you wrote back is pretty solid. reminds me of the Whos down in Whoville standing hand-in-hand singing their freaky Xmas carols, even after the Grinch stole all their Xmas shit.

Less than 2 weeks...

I'm probably having the same feeling that some poor 16 year old kid has when his girlfriend sets a date for them to finally have sex.

She and her mother should take the rest of the family to court. It seems highly likely to me that the sale of the grandfather's property (and appropriation of his cash) was illegal.
