Ah "Some Kind of Monster" they should have called it "Tears of the Metal Gods".

I just watched Tales from the Script (streaming on netflix) and while it isn't amazing there is enough hard truth and humor ot make it enjoyable especially if you are intersted in the craft of writing.

Cropsey - Only available via streaming on Netflix. It's a real-life horror story that only gets worse as the story progresses. Riveting and well-done. Understands that while it wants to show the truth, it will never truly be able to. It's strange and sad that people still think they can bury the sins of the past and they will never return.

Just watched Restrepo on Netflix streaming the other night. Another great one that's sure to be nominated this year. Scary to think that a guy was willing to go out there with those guys with nothing but a camera and some body armor.

Just saw "Public Speaking" - the Martin Scorsese-directed documentary about Fran Lebowitz. Hilarious, biting, insightful - and the verbal velocity is almost dizzying.

Just finished Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers: Runnin' Down a Dream.

Great subject for a documentary and a great resource to appreciate Petty on a whole deeper level: as a person of integrity, a songwriter and as a cultural icon that is enduringly centrally-situated in American rock music. I know I certainly gained a greater appreciation for the Petty even though I have no shortage of Petty music in the library.

The only criticism I have is the length of the film. A prevailing rule of filmmaking is to evaluate whether a scene moves the story forward, and there was (for me) an overabundance of concert footage that either went on for too long, was redundant or altogether unnecessary.

Add to that, fairly early on in the film, we learn that one of the band's maxims is "Don't bore us, get to the chorus" and I think the editors for this film would have served the film's subject better if they has taken that lesson more to heart.

Loved the movie but I'm friends with some people who are in that world and they've said that the movie was edited to make him look bad and that things didn't really play out the way they did on film.

That really can be the case for any documentary. They all to some degree or another are the story that the filmmaker wanted to tell. Whether that be the whole truth or not. That is why its interesting to see multiple documentaries on similar subjects.

Another that I watched recently that is still available on netflix is a film called "Tales from the Script." Interviewing Hollywood screenwriters about their craft.
William Goldman, John Carpenter, Frank Darabont and a lot more.
