That said, I think it is also important to consider Marvel intends to do Captain America as a period piece; that's an important element in casting. You need someone that "looks" suitable for the time period, e.g. World War II.

My vote is for Jon Hamm.

But again, that is an essential component to Captain America. Besides, Spider-man was never, ever depicted as a big guy. Tobey's body, with the weight training he did, was perfect Spider-man.
Cap has a different body type than Spider-man. Just look at the BD pieces.

the reason the size is important is because If you're trying to bring the character to life than you must recognize he is a big man in the comics.
and 2, the super soldier serum pumped him up, so it makes sense for him to be a bigger man.
I'm sorry but John Cina's body is the best choice out of everyone else posted here.
There are some other choices to be sure, but they are too old, too short, or too small. IMHO, JH's acting isn't so bad that he couldn't pull off a solid Steve rogers/CA under the direction of a fine director.

I realize looking at his promo pics and knowing he is a wrestler makes him seem like a knightmare, but just watch the Marine before you make up your mind.

(not that I'm saying the marine is a great movie or anything. I'm just saying his acting was bad, and his agility, his size, his athleticism were all classic Cap.

Putting the fate of a potentially massive franchise on the back of an unproven athlete/wrestler simply because of their build just isn't viable, though. Cena was a cipher in THE MARINE; you could have dropped in any number of stuntmen and gotten the same effect. For a character as culturally iconic (i.e. literally dressed in the colors of the country) and as heavily named as "Captain America" you need someone articulate ... reducing Captain America to physical size/bicep circumference, to me, is the antithesis of the character. He's supposed to represent more than just brute force and pectoral machismo; I think it'd be a huge disservice to the character to sign up a HGH automaton like Cena, and especially if he's expected to hold his own against actors like Downey and Norton in an ensemble film like THE AVENGERS.

Statue-Man had some interesting casting choices; I wanna amend a few and play along if I may.

    AVENGERS
    Thor - NO FRIGGIN' IDEA
Captain America - Jon Hamm/Josh Brolin
    Wonder Man - Tom Welling
    Hawkeye - Michael Vartan
    The Vision - Jeffrey Donovan
    The Wasp - January Jones
Scarlet Witch - Rhona Mitra/Mila Kunis
Dr. Henry Pym - Adam Baldwin
The Black Panther - Djimon Hounsou
    Quicksilver - Matthew Marsden
    Odin - Brian Blessed
    Dr. Strange - Jim Caviezel
    Luke Cage - Tyrese
    Iron Fist - Ray Park
    Daredevil - Guy Pearce

The Red Skull - Thomas Kretschmann
    Doctor Doom - Jason Isaacs
    Loki - Mathieu Amalric
    The Enchantress - Ali Larter
Baron Wolfgang Von Strucker - Colm Feore
Baron Zemo - Luke Goss/Peter Stormare
    Baron Mordo - Ian McShane
    Arnim Zola - Jeffrey Combs
    Crossbones - Johnny Messner

Has anyone mentioned Josh Duhamel from Transformers. I think he is also 6foot two, tall enough.

don't get me wrong. I agree with what you're saying.
I guess for me one is as important as the other so what they should do is find an unknown who delivers on both fronts.

I also happen to believe that an actor is only as good as his director.
I really believe that a great director can make a mediocre actor great, and a bad director can make a great actor mediocre.
There are plenty of examples of either.

Keep in mind also that none of those roles (Spider-man, Iron man etc.) require, you know, thespians or anything.
(not to downplay what you said or the fact that I totally recognize what Downey, Mcguire, and the others have brought to those films.)

Tom Welling as Wonder Man? Wonder Man is not supposed to be attractive.

Really? I gotta be honest, I'm not all that familiar with the character's backstory ... he just always looked like the typical handsome, muscle-bound superhero-type. What's the dilly, yo?

My fiance and I came up with this one after watching Hollywoodland last week:

    Dash Mihok

He's got good acting chops, around the right age, is pretty tall & built, totally has the "look" and is a relative unknown they could get for cheap and sign to a bunnch of movies with relatively no prima donna stuff (I'd assume)
