It's a pretty good commercial and the fact that it's directed by Brett Ratner is pretty inconsequential. What's desperate about it? Activision advertising?

They had David Archuleta and David Cook doing Guitar Hero 3 commercials in the same "outfit" during the American Idol finals, and GH3 sold better than Rock Band 1.

EDIT: And honestly. Lack of confidence in the product? Please. They have had people working on the band thing for at least two years. The guitar is the most inventive thing related to a music game I have ever seen.
