Wife and I just finished a DVR marathon of most of the first half of the current season (everything from "Curse of the Black Spot" to "A Good Man Goes to War"... damn, that was fun.
Months after my Doctor Who introduction with Neil Gaiman's episode, I'm properly starting Doctor Who with Series One, Episode One "Rose" starting... now.
I just did this. I enjoy Rose as a character. But I do hope the overbite is less distracting for you than it was for me.Originally Posted by Supreme Convoy

I was too busy looking at her lips to worry about her teeth. Honestly... I need a companion I can feel some genuine affection for. The new chicks are nice. None of them presently measure up to those that came before with me though. I don't know what it is. Maybe I'm put off by how needy most of the new girls are. Taking a tally of em...
Rose: Needy in Romantic Ways cos she's got her thing for 10.
Martha: Needy romantically with the Doctor til she decided she wasn't and left
Donna Noble: Needy for everything BUT the Doctor with self esteem problems.
Amy Pond: Doesn't even know who she needs at times, but will settle for needing her husband AND the Doctor.
Rory: Needy for Amy more than basically anything.
Jack: Needs you for Sexings.
See? Needy freaking people. At least Sarah seemed to get over him after a while and finally moved on with her life. Yeah the old companions were largely reliable for us to have the doctor explain things to. Counted on to 'Scream and say What is it, Doctor?' with conviction. But Sarah was self-posessed and didn't seem to NEED anyone to self actualize. Nor did Leela or Romana. After that... It seemed it was one character after another who needed a parent surrogate in their lives that the doctor filled. (Nyssa, Adric, Peri, Ace, Turlough) And with the new series, it seems that emotional/romance needyness is the replacement for the whole parental stand in dynamic.
Whatever new companion we get? I'd like to see him or her as so self-assured that they don't need to be completed or validated by another person. Someone who chooses to go and adventure cos it's awesome. Not cos there's some hole inside them that needs filling. (or in some cases, other holes as well.) Moffat described Pond as. "Guys will love her. Girls will want to be her." Ugh. Really? Amy's a psycho hosebeast with a whole trunk of neuroses. Pretty as she is, I don't love her. And I don't think I'd be much interested in anyone who'd want to be her either.
Whatserface from Mars that died? She'd have been awesome. Wilf? Awesome. Catburglar Chick? Awesome. Every one of them self actualized bits of awesome with legs, hearts and minds of their own. I've about had it with emotionally damaged and broken companions. They make for nice drama, but who wants them to be the window through which we experience the wonder of the Whoniverse? I enjoy the stories. But I'm not what you'd call... empathizing with the companions all that much.

That was brilliant!
Good ep. Though the "Meet Dave" thing was out of nowhere for me.
