I really enjoyed it.
I got in on this late (just as I did with the New Frontier, buying the trades for the first time right before the announcement of the Absolute edition sadly).
Anyhow, I bought a copy of Justice League: The New Frontier Special today, and really loved it. Even though I don't have any intention of watching the movie version, it was such a treat to get a few more stories out of Cooke's amazing DC Superheroes retrospective.
The back-story of the staged Superman Batman fight was great, showing why both characters are so great, without turning them into simple contrasts. The Robin story is sort of why I bought the book when I heard about it. I wish it was actually drawn by Cooke, but it was pretty neat, showcasing how fun it'd be to be a teen sidekick. The Wonder Woman/Black Canary story was cute, and I guess a nice way to end it.
More and more I find myself turning to Darwyn Cooke when I want an example in great storytelling, beautifully vibrant drawing style, and body language. This little comic is a great example of why he is such a great artist. His SOLO book too, of course, serves as an example of his versatility, and his real love for comics (plus another New Frontier story). If any of you haven't read it, I suggest you check your shops for it in their back issues, because it is a great, great comic.
Anyhow, I wondered how everyone else responded to this? and what is Darwyn up to now?
I really enjoyed it.
Darwyn Cooke is currently adapting the "Parker" novels into comics for IDW.
He also just drew Jonah Hex #33. I haven't read it yet, but his work looks beautiful as always.
I thought the special was pretty good, although I wish Cooke had done the whole thing by himself to be honest.

i thought the movie was really good.
Amazing cartooning as always, but I wasn't huge on the special as a whole. I seem to remember really enjoying the Robin/Kid Flash story, finding the Wonder Woman/Black Canary stuff to fluffy, and being annoyed at yet another Superman/Batman story where Batman comes off looking like a badass and Supes seems more like a chump. It's some kind of pathological zeitgeist I think, this need to see Superman get played or get his ass kicked.
Thank god for Morrison's All-Star.
Anyone know if DC's putting out a new printing of New Frontier with the special included?
I thought it was fantastic, and his Jonah Hex story was great. Cooke is probably my favorite creator these days, his stuff is so consistantly good.
Crime novels? That sounds pretty sweet.
And wow, I didn't know he did an issue of Jonah Hex! I have the Jonah Hex showcase, so I'd always wondered if the new series was any good. I'm going to pick that issue up today.
And I agree, I really wish Darwyn had drawn everything, too..
You know, I agree on shortchanging Superman.
I was thinking about it, and when you have these team-ups, especially with Batman, it's inevitable that Superman is subjugated to the stooge. It's easy to make him a government lapdog, like Red Son, Dark Knight Returns, etc. I guess they always choose Batman to be the freethinking vigilante, who has to show Superman the light, by taking him down a notch.
God knows that the conniving Curt Swan Superman wouldn't have stood for that shit.
and yeah, Morrison's Superman is the best
