From what I understood the legislature passed a bill legalizing gay marrige but still needs to get pass the governator. Similar bills had been passed but been vetoed by the governor.

Yes, the California legislature is the only state legislature to ever vote to legalize gay marriage, but Ahnold keeps vetoing.
But, now the California Supreme Court has (probably) made it a moot point.
There will probably be an amendment to the State Constitution to ban gay marriage on the November ballot (which would trump today's court ruling). I have no idea whether it would pass or not.
