Young Indiana Jones' returns in final DVD boxed set

LOS ANGELES - The junior version of Henry Jones Jr. is back — the one with Sean Patrick Flanery's face, not Harrison Ford's.

The third of three DVD collections of "The Adventures of Young Indiana Jones" debuts Tuesday, wrapping up the future archaeologist's early exploits and providing a prelude to Ford's fourth big-screen Indy flick next month.

As with the previous DVD sets, "Volume Three: The Years of Change" are not only a collection of TV escapades, but also a history lesson in a box.

Executive producer George Lucas has loaded the 10-disc set with seven feature-length adventures from the 1990s series, along with dozens of mini-documentaries about the real events and people Indy encounters, among them Woodrow Wilson, Ernest Hemingway, Louis Armstrong, Sidney Bechet and George Gershwin.

"A lot of times as an actor you have to talk about things and act like they're good. But this is not one of those. I'm more proud of this than anything I've ever done in my entire life," said Flanery, who played Indiana from his raw teens into his early 20s. "It's all quality, top shelf. It's prestigious."

The new set concludes Indy's years as a young spy during World War I, sends him on a treasure hunt that strands him on a tropical island, then follows him back home as he works briefly in Hollywood and studies archaeology at the University of Chicago.

"Young Indiana Jones" featured a largely unknown cast, unlike Ford's upcoming "Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull," whose co-stars include Cate Blanchett, Shia LaBeouf, John Hurt and Jim Broadbent. Due in theaters May 22, the movie reunites Ford with producer Lucas, director Steven Spielberg and Karen Allen, who reprises her role from 1981's "Raiders of the Lost Ark."

The TV version of Indy does have a few recognizable faces, though. Among the future stars who did guest spots were Catherine Zeta-Jones, Daniel Craig and Jeffrey Wright, the latter two now working together in the James Bond franchise.

Vanessa Redgrave also had a small part, as did Ford himself, briefly playing the older Indy in one episode.

"I had like huge stars playing second fiddle to me. Vanessa Redgrave was a co-star, which was bizarre. I hadn't done anything before then. I was almost offended for her," said Flanery, whose later credits include an ambitious congressman on TV's "The Dead Zone."

I'm guessing that the comment about Ford appearing in an episode is as close to a confirmation as we'll get about his part in the episode being intact, as opposed to all the other Old Indy bookends.

    AHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhhh memories

I vaguely remember a few episodes from when I was a kid. Like Indy's adventure with Pancho Villa in Mexico, and an episode he went to Africa with Teddy Roosevelt, good times
