Paul Reiser in Aliens - his nervous stage energy and flopsweat made him perfect for a cowardly corporate stooge.
Watching BRAZIL again this weekend, for the millionth time, I just felt the need to say that Gilliam's casting of Michael Palin as the scariest character in the movie was a masterstroke.
What other examples can you guys think of where an actor or actress was cast against type so successfully? Have at it, movie fans.

Winter is Coming.
Gary Oldman as Sirius Black. Never would have pictured it, but worked perfectly.
I'd also say, though obviously the movie isn't out, Heath Ledger in Dark Knight.![]()

He creeped the fuck out of me.

My girlfriend and I rented Tideland (Gilliam) the other night, and it might be the worst movie I have seen in years. We couldn't even get to the end. And we ALWAYS watch the whole movie, even if we hate it.
It was just so "LOOK AT ME, I'M SUPER-ARTSY, AND WEIRD JUST FOR THE HELL OF IT". It was just trying so hard, and failed so miserably.
Edit: To stay on topic here, I'm going to have to go with George Lucas casting the relatively unknown Mr. Ford as Han Solo.
