The Young Girl bites her lower lip to stop herself from screaming. She knows if she screams they’ll sedate her and she won’t get anywhere. They make it so hard for her not to scream.
Doctor: Okay Stephanie lets go over this again.
Stephanie: I already told you. I’m being he’d here against my will. My family and my loved ones think I’m dead.
Doctor: Your mother and father are perfectly aware of where you are Stephanie and they know you’re not dead.
Stephanie: Why do we have to do this same thing every 2 weeks? My story’s not going to change.
Doctor: You’re a superhero,
Stephanie: Super heroine.
Doctor: Named ‘Spoiler’.
Stephanie: I was also Robin but mostly yes.
Doctor: So you still claim to have a personal relationship with the vigilante ‘The Batman.’
Stephanie: Correct.
Doctor: Stephanie you know I’m your friend, yes?
Stephanie: If you say so.
Doctor: I only want to help you.
Stephanie: If you say so.
Doctor: Your mother misses you.
Stephanie: That woman is not my mother and even if she was I wouldn’t see her. She blamed my friends for what’s happened to me and it’s not their fault.
Doctor: If it’s not their fault whose fault is it?
Stephanie: I’m working on it.
The Doctor sighs and nods to an orderly who pops out of the room for a moment.
Doctor: I didn’t want to do this.
Stephanie: Do what?
The orderly re-enters the room carrying a newspaper which he hands to the Doctor.
Doctor: If you are who you claim you are care explaining this?
The Doctor unfolds the paper and holds it up to Stephanie who sees a blurry picture of Spoiler with the headline ‘Back from the grave?’
Stephanie: That’s…..that’s…..
Doctor: That’s not you. You are here.
Stephanie: Someone’s impersonating me! When I get out of here……
Doctor: Stephanie you’re the one impersonating this ‘Spoiler’. You see yourself as this dead super heroine and you only happen to share the same name. You have a completely different background to this girl. You are not this ‘Spoiler’ whether this is the original or not its not you.
Stephanie: I’d like to be taken to my room now please.
The Doctor sighs and takes off his glasses rubbing his eyes and nods to the orderly who walks over to Stephanie picking her up and taking her away. As Stephanie leaves the room she never takes her eyes off the headline. Rachael Thorn sits staring at the same headline with a frown on her face as she shakes her head and sets it down.
Rachael: What the heck does this mean?
The Question stands opposite Rachael and looks down at the newspaper.
Question: Could mean several things.
Rachael: Well is it her? The girl we were looking for?
Question: Possibly.
Rachael: It either is or it isn’t.
Question: More complicated than that.
Rachael: If she is dead then it isn’t her. People just don’t come back.
Question: I did.
Rachael: Yeah well I’m the only one who can speak to you so that doesn’t really count.
Question: Ever heard of Superman? He came back too. Green Arrow too. Also….
Rachael: Alright, I get it. People in your world tend to have a habit of not staying dead. So this is her?
Question: Could be. Could also be distraction to throw us off.
Rachael: Throw us off what? We weren’t really getting anywhere.
Question: So sure? Started asking questions and only the next day Gina Lynn is wanted for questioning by the Gotham Police. Coincidence or conspiracy?
Rachael: One of my lecturers once told me nothing is coincidence.
Question: Smart woman.
Rachael: I’m so confused. Nobody wants to admit her existence but yet here she in front and centre in the newspaper. Surely someone other than us is asking questions.
Question: not enough. Need to do more research. What’s the name of the reporter?
Rachael: Erm….
Rachael picks up the newspaper and scans the by-line.
Rachael: Brandon Vonn.
Question: Perhaps it would be wise to pay Mr. Vonn a visit.
Rachael: I’ll look in the phone book.
Question: Better be quick.
Rachael: Got a party to go to?
Question: Someone doesn’t want questions asked about Stephanie Brown. I’m betting whoever that is will want a chat with Mr. Vonn and it won’t be pleasant.
Elsewhere in the city Brandon Vonn eats a slice of chicken as he prepares dinner for himself. He looks over to his right and smiles with pride at his front page scoop. However his moment is spoiled when his doorbell rings.
Brandon: Just ignore it, just ignore it.
The doorbell rings again repeatedly and Brandon sighs and walks over to the door and opens it not looking very pleased.
Brandon: Can I help you?
On the other side of the door is a young well dressed man supporting himself with a cane on his right side.
Man: Hello my name is Jason Bard and I’ve had a hell of a time trying to reach you at your office Mr. Vonn.
Bard and Vonn exchange a short conversation before the reporter finally steps aside to let his guest inside his house. As Jason Bard steps inside Bard’s home Hush watches from a distance with a pair of binoculars.
Hush: ‘Evil brings men together.’
Rachael looks around nervously as she tries to open a car door armed with 2 small pieces of metal.
Question: Should concentrate if haven’t done this before.
Rachael: I can’t believe I’m breaking into someone’s car. How do you get me to do these things.
Question: Must be my good looks.
Rachael smiles as the lock to the car clicks and she stands up stretching.
Rachael: We’re taking this back after we’re done, deal?
Question: If can get car back in on piece.
Rachael: That’s not funny.
Rachael gets into the car and attempts to hotwire it leaving the Question alone on the sidewalk.
Question: Wasn’t joking.
Rachael: Will you get in here and help me.
Question: What do you need?
Rachael jumps as the question appears behind her and she bumps her off the roof of the car as a result.
Rachael: OW! Damn it!
Question: Startled you?
Rachael: You’re the brains, you tell me.
Question: Think we should get new car.
Rachael: Best idea I’ve heard all day.
Question: Better hurry. No telling what could happen if we hesitate.
As Rachael and the Question drive away a guard passes Stephanie’s cell and hears a dull moan. The guard pauses and he hears the groans grow louder.
Guard: Keep it down in there!
Stephanie: Help! Please help!
The guard hesitates but another pain filled groan causes him to take out his security pass and open the door. He finds Stephanie huddled in the corner of her cell and walks over.
Guard: What the hell happened.
Stephanie: Sympathy pains.
Guard: Pardon?
Stephanie kicks the guard in the crotch and grabs his baton and hits him over the head hard. She moves as fast as lightning and displays a certain amount of gymnastic prowess.
Stephanie: You heard me, sympathy pains.
Stephanie picks up the Guard’s security pass and smiles and she twirls the baton in her hand.
Stephanie: I think it’s time I went out and met my would be replacement.
