I really hate when movies and TV shows use a fake "555" number. It takes me out of the story and reminds me I'm watching fiction, and that shouldn't happen.

In most cases, the phone number doesn't have to be spoken. It can be scribbled on a napkin out of sight and passed across the table, hand off a business card, or editing can simply hide it some other way. And it's rarely important for the viewer to know a phone number, so it's useless information for storytelling.

When the Monster Of The Week or the Big Bad shows up, it invariably picks up the toughest character among the heroes and hurls him across the room in order to demonstrate just how Big and Bad it really is.

Named for the tendency in Star Trek The Next Generation and for hostile creatures to do that very thing to Worf.

Also known as "jobbing" in certain circles, although jobbing usually refers to a character who loses many fights in order to make the hero appear stronger by contrast (See: Renji Abarai or Vegeta). It usually affects whatever team member is brash and headstrong.

Or why do so many people from other countries say everything in English but "yes," "no," and a few other words? If you were speaking in English, why would you say a few words in your native language? Weird.

In a lot of Asian movies I've seen a lot of characters will do the opposite--everything they say is in their native tongue, except for an odd English 'yes', 'no', or English curse word/catch phrase.

Prison photos.

Whenever you had a person in your neighborhood go off to prison and he will send pictures back with his letters, almost always, someone would be crouched down all "serious and cool" (DL Hughley mentioned this in a stand-up). This was perceived by some as cool so, non-incarcerated folks started doing it in normal photos and stuff. Eventually, it floated over into music videos.
