Can you open your eyes underwater in the ocean?

There are a lot of movies that have people diving into the ocean to rescue people and what not. Is that possible without a face mask? I've always thought the salt water would burn.

    Oh, you can do it.
    But I wouldn't.

I've done it lots of times and never had a problem.

Can't see shit... but it doesn't hurt.

Yes, you can. I wouldn't do it in an area where there's a lot of sand and shit all over the place, but the salinity of the water itself is fine.

it does, but more from the sand and the seaweed that can get in your face than the saltwater.

I have sensitive eyes, I can't even wear contacts, and I can't open my eyes underwater without pain...

You can actually breathe in salt water.
