    Jewish Tombstone Unveiling

Anyone ever go to one of these? I'm going to one in a couple of weeks, for my husband's great-uncle, and I was wondering if there's anything I need to know...etiquette-wise.

    Thankies in advance.

Everything I learned about the Jews I learned from reading Brian Michael Bendis comics.

That should be a t-shirt or something.

    Is this a "vey"-less ceremony?

Just dress nice, be respectful. In Judaism, we wait a year after the funeral to show the tombstone, so, consider it a memorial service.

Why is that (just out of curiosity)?

Is it just tradition? Is there a reason behind it?

It was a practice that popularized in the 19th century, no real religious obligation though. It's a really nice practice though, and it's a great way to remember someone

Thank you, kind sir. Usually I hate funerals and stuff, avoid them like the plague, but this guy was so wonderful...I really miss him lots and want to be there for this. He was my first 'buddy' in my husband's family - we just clicked. He even liked my jokes... Towards the end, he was having a lot of problems with his memory and all, but he did have some good days. Last summer we went to a family BBQ, and he was there - it was the last time I was to see him. Anyway, on the table where we sat, there was this ear of uncooked corn...and at the bottom of the big ear, was a smaller ear growing upward. It looked something like an erect penis. So, I picked up the corn, showed it to him, and said, 'Oh, look! A boy corn!' - well, he got this glint in his eye and laughed and laughed, and for the rest of the day, everytime he'd see me, he mutter 'boy corn', shake his head, and chuckle. Made me feel good to see him happy like that.

    Thanks again for the insight.

Another sort of tradition is to bring a small stone/rock (usually shiny for some reason, but maybe that's just all I seem to recall sing) so that you place it on the tombstone afterwards....sort of as a way of saying "I was here to visit you."
