Those two minis, along with Trinity, are wonderful. He's great with these characters and that time period.
So after reading the trades of Batman and the Monster Men and Batman and the Mad Monk, I have to say I think Matt Wagner is one of the best damn Batman writers/artists out there.
Where as Frank Miller seems to have completely lost his way with the character, Matt seems to have picked up right where Year One left off. His Batman, along with the supporting cast, is spot on. These are right up there with the Engelhart/Rogers run. I hope DC keeps him on limited series like these, if only for the high quality. And personally, I think he draws one of the best Batman’s out there.

Him and Dini are my favorite batman writers right now. I wish he was doing the main book, even though, yea, that's never gonna happen. *sigh*
I loved Trinity and I normally don't like stories with DC's Big Three. I have read some Grendel and thought it was meh, but these Batman series looked pretty good. Will have to pick these up.
What does everyone think about Wagner's Mage stuff. Worth picking up?
I would buy Batman on a regular basis if Wagner was the writer. And his art has always been great. I really do need to get caught up with Mage. I loved his Grendel stuff.
I loved the first Mage series, the second one left me cold.
I love the Hunter Rose Grendel stuff, and the Grendel Prime stuff, but in-between is a lot of mediocre issues. It gets so bogged down (and I can't believe I'm saying this) in politics and religion that it becomes incomprehensible.
I need to read the two recent Wagner Batman minis. I somehow ended up with four of the six issues of Batman and the Monster Men, so I just need to find those other two issues (#2 and #3, I think). And I'll definitely pick up the Mad Monk trade some week when I don't have much to buy.
Batman and Grendel is a good read as well. There might actually be two Batman/Grendel series, come to think of it.
