    Collections vs. single issues

Not trying to flog this horse too much, but I have decided that I want to swap out some of my single issues for the TPB/HC collections. Which collected editions does everyone think far surpass the single issues as far as extra content? Is there somewhere online that you can find a list of the extras included? Thanks!

Depends on what books you're reading.

I like the oversized HC pretty well. I don't care about the extras though, just the larger format. I just sold my Captain America issues for the omnibus.

In my opinion, the easiest way to make the distinction is this:

Creator owned stuff - buy singles

Comics from the big two - get mini-series in trade format and monthlies in singles

Ultimate Marvel stuff, maybe Bendis' creator owned stuff, Kabuki, probably Alan Moore's ABC stuff. Absolute editions are a no-brainer to me, as I have loved every one that I have gotten. I just don't want to drop the cash on a trade if the extras are not worth it, and I don't see a way of knowing what extras are included, if they would be worth my time and trouble...

This is me to a "T."

I love the OHCs due to the large amount of story (on average 12-18 issues), the glossy paper and the elongated page size. I like large chunks of comics.

I will buy the occasional PHC if it's a story I really enjoyed in singles and want to read again. I hardly ever reread back issues, as I file them away and it becomes a hassle to get them out.

I would sell my singles and just get what I want to reread in trade if I wern't so scared of the convoluted system of eBay. I've never sold anything on there, but I'm frightented to try.

About the only time I buy TPB's is when buying the single issues are far out of my price range, such as collecting a lot of the golden and silver age issues in the Essentials, or in single reprints, like the Fantasy Masterpiece issues that reprinted the original Silver Surfer series up to issue #14.

    Re: Collections vs. single issues

I buy singles of books that I can remove double-sided ads from in preparation for custom binding. I like supporting books with fewer ads, as they take up less space when binding them into custom hardcovers (20-25 issues a piece).

This means I buy issues from Dark Horse like Conan and Star Wars, books from Dynamite like Red Sonja, and various others.

I don't really read much DC stuff but I get trades of Y: The Last Man that bind rather well, and I have a couple Absolute editions.

Marvel stuff... I dropped issues about a year back when they hiked prices and ad counts again. For now I buy OHC's almost exclusively, and the occasional PHC for a mini-series I really want if I'm sure it's the final treatment it will get.

Custom binding has become my hobby and I highly recommend it.

i hate "extras" clogging up the backs of trades
yet i'm pretty much trade only

    i'm a walking contradiction
