Winter is Coming.
Desolation Jones #1 continues Warren Ellis' subversion of popular genre conventions. The dialogue is sharp; if it's not the way people actually talk, then it's the way they talk in really great drama. The plot is threadbare and silly - but that's not what Ellis' main concern is. By giving us the initial answers to the most pertinent questions (Who what why where and how is Desolation Jones) Ellis gives his lead and his version of LA a neo-pulp atmosphere dense with possibility. Although we've seen similar premises in Ennis' Preacher work, by choosing not to play it for laughs, Ellis has a much broader palette to choose from. He's really crystallized what aspects of the supernatural he wants to talk about with his recent writing. Kudos to Wildstorm for not allowing this book to become limited as an Avatar production.
The art is amazing. Williams continues from Promethea to knock readers on our collective asses by showing the visual skill of the best film directors. His broad style range and decisive panelling keep him in the same league as, but distinctive from, Cassaday. These two on the same book keep it fresh and unguessable - the only place I'm sure this book is going is my collection.
10 out of 10

Ok, cool. It would be nice if it was there.
i love you. i cant wait to read this book. it only makes sense that a book with all the pieces in place that you mentioned is a 10 out of 10.Originally Posted by Fourthman
Yeah Fourthman, glad to see your glowing review. Ellis and Williams is a great combo. Since this is a 6-parter I was gonna wait for the reviews, and then do the old "wait for the trade" routine most likely, but I just might have to pick this up in singles instead now.
THE WRITING:
I dig Warren Ellis. I love his Transmetropolitan. I really like his Ultimate FF. He writes crazy, cool stuff...and this is no different. The concept behind Desolation Jones is cool, and the set-up done here is pretty cool.
THE ART:
I first came across Williams when he did a Moon Knight mini a few years back. I loved his art then, and I loved it here.
THE GIST:
I wasn't planning on picking this up, but now that I've read the issue I feel immersed in this world they've set up. I'm definately considering picking his up regularly.
