Interesting. Does it say anything about whether there would be a way to replicate this effect without the negative effects of smoking while pregnant?Originally Posted by JRChapoy
thought some of you may find this interesting
I can't actually post a link because it's a pay site we access through the university, but you can look it up, the source information is listed below
Maternal smoking protects daughters from breast cancer
Source: Epidemiology 2005; 16: 3
Assessing the association between smoking habits during pregnancy and breast cancer incidence in the resulting offspring.
Women born to mothers who smoked while they were pregnant are less likely to develop breast cancer than those born to mothers who abstained, US research shows.
As clinical studies have demonstrated that maternal cigarette smoking reduces pregnancy estrogen levels, it seems plausible that women exposed to cigarette smoke prenatally may have a reduced risk of breast cancer, suggest William Strohsnitter (Tufts-New England Medical Center, Boston, Massachusetts) and colleagues.
To test this hypothesis, the team analyzed data for 4031 women who took part in a follow-up study of health outcomes following prenatal exposure to diethylstilbestrol and whose mothers also provided information about cigarette smoking during the respective pregnancy.
Using Poisson regression modeling, the authors found that fetal exposure to maternal cigarette smoke cut the risk of breast cancer by about a half (relative risk [RR] = 0.49), when compared with no such exposure. This protection was more apparent among daughters of women who smoked 15 or fewer cigarettes a day than those of heavier smokers, but the data were insufficient to estimate a precise dose-response relationship, note Strohsnitter et al.
"These results support the hypothesis that in utero exposure to maternal cigarette smoke reduces breast cancer incidence," concludes the team.

they do mention future studies looking at how to do what you speak, but nothing specific
Link
here's the link for the article, but I doubt anyone will be able to access it, it's pay only...although some of you at universities may be able to access the entire article if you are so interested (they filter IPs according to subscription)
