    Why do people grunt?

I had an idea pop into my head during lunch. Why do people grunt? Like when lifting heavy objects or pushing kids down stairs, why do people make grunting noises?

Because it feels good. Except for when you push kids downstairs. Then it's the sound of your soul laughing.

I have a vivid imagination is all.

But I have an awesome job at a company called TeachTown. We develop software-assisted therapy and education programs for kids with Autism Spectrum Disorders.

That can be hard to hear over the sweet sound of crunching child bones.

I always thought it had something to do with declension of muscles or something and it was actually healthy to do it while working out and stuff. But that might be a big, big lie.

It feels healthy. I know if I'm lifting something heavy and don't let out that grunt of air and expel whatever magic it is, it doesn't feel right. It feels painful almost to hold the grunt in.

well, when lifting you're SUPPOSED to be exhaling for part of the motion and inhaling for part of the motion. the grunt is kind of like an abbreviated exhale.
