“The PS3 is a total disaster on so many levels, I think It’s really clear that Sony lost track of what customers and what developers wanted,” said Newell. “I’d say, even at this late date, they should just cancel it and do a ‘do over’. Just say, ‘This was a horrible disaster and we’re sorry and we’re going to stop selling this and stop trying to convince people to develop for it.’”

Now, I take this with a grain of salt since Gabe is an ex-Microsoftie. And, while he's no Sid Mier's Sid Mier!, Gabe is a rather big fish in the game pond to be speaking so bluntly against the PS3.

He's also a really nice and really smart guy.

He's also a really nice and really smart guy.

Yeah, the one time I talked to himw as during a GDC roundtable on the future of the first person shooter. This was a few months after Half-Life had blown away the entire industry, and he was the one guy in the room I wanted to hear speak. Instead, I got to listen to some jackass who was making a Werewolf game that never shipped ramble on about how Half-Life was nice and all, but he didn't think it was anything special.

I was in Target last night and saw NBA 2K7 was on sale. I'd wanted the game, but I hadn't $60 wanted it. I decided I $40 wanted it and went to get the clerk to open the special bulletproof, laser grid guarded, case.

It just so happened he was next tot he PS3 display when I found him. The PS3 display with the same 12 60gb models still in the case that were there last week when I was in Target.

"Hey, I wanted to get a game out of the case."

"For the PS3?!" he asked, sounding like I'd just asked if Target stocked dogs to kick and a babies for punching.

"No, 360."

"Oh, yeah, good. Okay." He actually sounded relieved. Like maybe the world wasn't as topsy turvy as he had thought moments before.
