I do the same thing and it is tough shit. Once I have a first draft of something done, I usually go back and edit the dialogue a character one at a time, so I don't get the voices confused.

Yeah i try to keep a vernacular. And I am very weary of Writing characters that are from a place with a thick draw like Boston or New York because I don't know how to write that. I am comfortable with Southern Vernacular. It's where I am from. Usually in my mind I keep them separate and think of what they would say.

I aim to strike.

And strike you do kind sir!

If by actually working in the field you mean independently publishing a book with next to no input, influence or contact with the comics industry at large, you, good sir, win a

That's probably why I'll never make it at Marvel. I like to know my characters inside and out before I write them to any real extent, so it really takes me a while to warm up on a project. The FFP characters write their own dialog at this point. I just type out what they're telling me. I hit a clunker every now and again, but it flows pretty easily for me most of the time.

They really need to hire me to write Dazzler or Hellstorm, though. I'm itching to write some horror comics.

I develop my characters stories in my mind and try to give them reasons for being the way they are.

Characters always come first for me - I write very character driven stuff, so I think that's why it's so difficult for me to come up with proper pitches. I'm not about the plot, I'm about the characters and having THEM advance the plot.

Nothing happens in the first issue of FFP, but EVERYTHING happens. There's no real action until issue three, and it's a fucking superhero book in a way. It's so hard to explain what it's about, because it's about the characters.

Hock
01-29-2007, 10:13 PM
So what do you think about this idea for a comic I'm going to write. I'm still working on some of the plot details and the secondary characters, but the essence is there.

It would be written as a 6 issue mini. It's about a guy, A.J., who gains the power to travel backwards in time, mentally not physically. Like Bill Murray in Goundhog day where at the end of Every day he wakes up in the morning and retains all his memories of what happens. Except A.J. can fully control his powers. He picks the wrong number at a roulette table he can go back a minute and change it. He gets a girl pregnant he can go back a month and put a condom on. The first two issues take place when he is 17 and first discovers his powers. The last four when he is phisically about 22 and has mastered them. It's a pretty dark story and he does some pretty disturbing shit and A.J. is basically driven insane.

Sounds fucking brilliant man. I was working on a story about a time traveler who crashes into the 1500's around the time Cortez arrives. His ship leaves a green streak through the air and The Aztecs think it's Quaztecoatl come back to save them. But really it just turns Cortez and his men into Zombies. I love reading about casually selfish people who discover they can do something extraordinary and allow said selfishness consume them. Especially when they start with nothing. To me, it's one of the most interesting facets of the human condition.

Thank you. And yeah, not only is the character extremely selfish, because there are literally no consequences to what he does, as long as he goes to tack it back, he has no hesitation in doing anything. The first time through he always does the first thing that pops into his head, and if that doesn't work out he just goes and changes it.

I think one major roadblock is taking yourself -- and by extension, your writing -- way too seriously. Everyone wants what they write to be terribly profound and deep. Everyone wants to be in love with their writing.

Fuck that shit. It's about writing a conversation about farts between two friends. It's the girl you've always had a crush on discovering that you're not actually gay (don't steal that, it's mine and in FFP #2). It's about putting your characters in a ridiculous situation and them acknowledging that it's ridiculous.

It's also way more fun than writing something sober and sombre. I will always go for the humor. Every time.

There are dramatic moments in FFP. It's not all shits and giggles and boob jokes. There's some pathos, and it can get deep from time to time. You're right, real life is both -- and I want to portray very real characters, even if some of them are caracitures. Hell, I've got a landlocked pirate chick with a pet weasel. Jason: OK, I think gettin grid of the "Lads" and "Lasses" is a mistake. It causes the team to seem very grim n gritty 90's style. The lame names carry a certain amount of kitsch to them, which I think causes a starker juxtoposition to the dark reality around them. Those names are totally 50's, but to me, in your setting, it alludes to a rebellion, perhaps against the puritanical 50's society that is around them. By that token, I wouldn;t change Brainiac's form, I would revert it to be closer to how the villain Brainiac debuted back in 50's era Superman, bringing him closer to his villainious heritage. I love their allegiance to Darkseid, but I would make it an heir to Darkseid. Perhaps a reincarnation of Darkseid, giving him motivation (he's caught in a constant cycle of rebirth and pain, thus his desire to find the anti life equation and his suffering). It would also give you a Legion version of Darkseid. Perhaps Darkness Lad. That would be cool.

Elaborate (you too David)

If you like straight forward superheroics, combined with emotional depth and teenaged soap operas (Sounds like Ultimate Spider-man?) Then you'll love Runaways. The characters are singluar, adn speak in original, clearly defined voices. The plot will keep you guessing, the art (although alittle rough in the first volume) shines.

Elaborate (you too David)

...In slow motion this time, Gelf takes 2 steps towards Glenn, planting his left foot firmly, his right leg describes a perfect arc, his steel toed boot contecting solidly with Glenn's shin with a muffled thud. Gelf then spins on his left foot and pushes off into a graceful slo-mo run away from Glenn, who is now clutching his shin in agony and cursing wildly. Gelf's abrubt departure is accompanied by a strangely high pitched giggling sound.

.. Elaborate enough? :D

Oh, and Runaways has extraordinarily well developed characters, is tightly written, and looks great.

Is it quite continuity heavy?

No. It certainly takes place in the Marvel U, but away from it, for the most part. All of the cast is original characters, and all you need is the most basic knowledge of the Marvel U to understand it. That said, it's not like it ignores it's own continuity or anything. It is wonderfully consistant.

The first season of Runaways doesn't really tie in to the greater Marvel U. at all except for an appearance by Cloak and Dagger. The second season ties in more, but doesn't rely on readers' knowledge of continuity, like most Marvel books theses days, really.

Oh, exceptt, BKV demands anyone who buys the first trade has to describe the DC Multiverse and it's continuity to the clerk at the comic store ;)

Is it quite continuity heavy?

Only within itself, if you know what I mean. It doesn't depend on Marvel 616 continuity hardly at all, but it does have developing characters and story arcs within itself, which benefit from reading the whole series.

Luckily there's a nice, cheap little digest version of the first arc that's been ouut for a bit which I found quite useful (and really amazingly good)

My first time reading the series (besides a single here and there) was in those digests. One of the most pleasurable reading experiences I've ever had. It was spring in Ann Arbor, on a bench near the University of Michigan Art School. Listening to whatever teen punk I could to match the feel of the series.

Legion of Darkness

Twenty four issues, separated into six issue stories.

I like this pitch, Jason. I think dropping the lads and girls and whatnot works for your idea. You maybe can't keep the kitch and have a story this dark. I also like how you provide an actual example of the type of story you want to tell (issue 1), rather than only the emotional entrance, or overall idea of the story. I'm intrigued to know more of your story ideas, and would like to see what the overall arc of the story through the 24 issues would be, as regards the development of the series. Namely, do they turn against Darkseid? How do they change / what do they realize if not? Will they become heroes?

That said, while I like the idea of physically altering Braniac, having him be a tiny man seems pretty arbitrary and would be visually silly.

jason hissong
01-30-2007, 10:05 AM

the braniac thing came mostly because i liked what waid did in this current version of braniac's homeworld- this is a culture that values information above all, so they shrunk everything to create more space for information.
