I gotta hand it to that Brian K. Vaughan. He knows how to end a mini-series. What a great and inspirational love story to the comics medium. I loved that Brian injected his whole outlook on why he spends more time on new creations for comics than already established characters. And while comics need to keep those characters running around, the industry is always hungry for something new.
Oh, and I LOVED the scene of what Case is stuck doing when she gets that presumably great opportunity at a design firm in NYC. I completely related, except instead of mailroom duty, I was chained to a Mac for 6 months designing formulaic childrens' apparel. :)

It did, and it was great. And I have yet to read the Adventures of Kavalier and Clay novel.

I haven't read it either. I picked this up from BKV's pimping on here. See, pimping to the board works!

Oh man. I loved Kavalier and Clay. It's my favorite book by far, and has been since maybe 2002, when I read it. The Escapists, I can honestly say, is one of my favorite mini series. I loved this book from beginning to end, and was a fitting add-on to the story of Kavalier and Clay. Also, for those who read the novel, there's a little in joke about the characters in the end. Loved that.
This is where it gets a little weird for me. The conclusion of this book made me believe in God. The Christian God that steps into our every day lives with miracles and all that good stuff, similar to your flying spaghetti monster or what have you. I've been going through tough period over the last few years, and have had a chip on my shoulder for a while about things that happened in the past. I was talking with a friend last night, and she pointed it out that I tend to wallow in my own self-pity and pain of the past. Of course, I was predictably defensive on the subject, and she said that God would speak to me. She also told me she refused to read comic books last night. I got hope at about 3am, and The Escapists was waiting for me. I got to this part of the book:
You know how people always say that those who forget the past are doomed to repeat it? That's true, but I'm beginning to think that those who become obsessed with the past are doomed to be trapped ther.
And for the first time, I felt God was speaking to me. Not through a burning bush, but through a really incredible comic book series. Just sharing.

Wow. Thank you, gents. That story was really important to me, so I'm very grateful that it seems to have connected with some of you, as well.

Read it, dude. It is a brilliant piece of work and love letter to comics.
Brian, I gotta say you really hit it out of the park with this issue.
I loved the ending with Max seeing freedom on a blank comic page. It just felt like the perfect note to end on and offered an interesting insight as to what drives creators, such as yourself, to create. Plus, it kinda got me itching to see what your next new book will be :)
