Bill Amend has decided to retire from daily strips. I've never been a rabid Foxtrot fan, but I will miss having someone THAT nerdy in the comics pages.

FoxTrot to Cease Dailies
Kansas City, MO (12/05/2006) Bill Amend’s popular FoxTrot comic strip will go to a Sunday-only publication schedule as of Dec. 31, 2006, announced Universal Press Syndicate today. The last daily will be Saturday, Dec. 30. Reruns of dailies will be available for Web usage.

“After spending close to half of my life writing and drawing FoxTrot cartoons, I think it’s time I got out of the house and tried some new things,” said Amend. “I love cartooning and I absolutely want to continue doing the strip, just not at the current all-consuming pace. I’ve been blessed over the years with a terrific syndicate, patient newspaper clients, and more support from readers than I probably deserve, and I want to assure them all that while I’ll be now a less-frequent participant on the comics pages, I’ll continue to treat my visits as the special privilege they are.”

Amend, who started the strip in April, 1988, and who has more than 1,000 client newspapers, is taking time to pursue other creative outlets. “In addition to Sunday newspapers, we may see FoxTrot entertaining us in other kinds of media platforms,” says Lee Salem, president and editor of Universal Press Syndicate.

Amend has more than 30 published FoxTrot comic collections and has licensed his characters for calendars and wallpapers for cell phones. He was nominated in 2006 as a finalist for cartoonist of the year by the National Cartoonists Society’s Reuben Award.

Damn. This is one that actually made me laugh.

That's a shame. I mean, I can understand why: he's been recycling the same strips for years, but they still always drew a chuckle from me.

Foxtrot had a great run - one of my favourite funnies. Sad to see it go, but Bill Amend definitely deserves a nice, relaxing retirement if it's what he wishes.

There really is no reason to read comic strips anymore.

That's because you are a tasteful genius.

Pearls Before Swine, people....

And Foxtrot was amusing, if never great. I'll miss it.

Man, I keep forgetting to pick up the Metro, I haven't read Pearls Before Swine in a long time. It was always pretty classic.

Zits has it's moments.

In all honesty, I don't think I'm going to miss it very much. Foxtrot can be funny, sure, but at the same time it's gotten really stale. Yes, Peter eats a lot. Yes, Paige is an incredibly insecure high school girl. Yes, Roger is dense as lead. Yes, Jason and Marcus are massive nerds. It's just gotten old.

Now Pearls Before Swine, Get Fuzzy, and Mutts are my faves right now. That's good shtuff.

Well that's just too bad. I was really enjoying Foxtrot on a daily basis. I hope the Sunday strips keep coming for years.

Sad but he deserves a break.

I think there's still good stuff out there as far as newspaper comics are concerned... it's just fewer and farther between.
Get Fuzzy
Zits
Pickles
and yes, dare I say it, For Better or For Worse

I always enjoyed Foxtrot, but I think the fact that he barely grew as an artist in the long time he was doing the strip sort of kept me from thinking it was everything it could be. Still, it was way better having it in the paper than some paid hack beating the dead corpse of Hagar the Horrible.

I've really enjoyed Foxtrot and will miss it. However there are always trades....

I'd love to see a Foxtrot cartoon with the right voice casting.

It's a great strip, so this sucks.

I am kinda surprised it hasn't been made into a TV show of some sort.

This is one of the few strips I still read, along with Get Fuzzy and Frazz, but it's not a big a deal as Calvin & Hobbes or Far Side were.

I hope my local paper (Bergen Record represent!) replaces it with something good, like Pearls... Because the Record's comics pages are mostly awful.

Sort of a bummer, it was always pretty solid.

I have never gotten the love for Get Fuzzy, though.

I still like some syndicated comics. 9 Chickweed Lane, Non Sequitir, This Modern World, Doonesbury... I dunno if I'd rate Foxtrot in the same league as Calvin & Hobbes, Bloom County or The Far Side. But I certainly enjoyed it on a daily basis. I hope he can enjoy himself outside. ^_^

Me either, I think it's totally unfunny.

It's been an amusing strip this week as they discuss what a comic strip writer would do with all the free time - the Warcraft line was awesome.

Foxtrot was okay, but I'd be really depressed if Get Fuzzy ceased to publish, almost as depressed as I was when The Far Side and Calvin and Hobbes went away.

Get Fuzzy is another one of those strips I think would make a good cartoon- if done right.

I enjoy Foxtrot alot, I don't think that it should be made into a television show however...Baby Blues and Dilbert have gone that road and to what end? Thanks, but no....
