FINCH RULES

David, you rule man! I went to the Paradise show this past weekend and checked out the shuster awards. I found about this board from Bendis at te show. What an amazing man Bendis is. how da heck could you not have won? How does a Kaare Andrews beat comic's hottest artist? How did Arcana Studios beat Dreamwave, if things were based on 2004 year? Dreamwave was the biggest comic publisher in Canada in 2004? It was a little wierd that all the winners was in attendance. Makes you gotta think.
Just food for thought. Keep drawing some kickass comics David. You ROCK!

Kaare Andrews is a great artist.
You know, the only award I've ever won was a Yellow Kid in 2000. It was an Italian award for best international cartoonist that I won when I went to a convention in Italy. ......I'm sure I would have won that if I had stayed at home though. lol

I imagine Dreamwave didn't win because of that whole thing where they didn't pay their employees. Not exactly a flattering aspect of a business.
Too bad you didn't get the kudos this year, Dave. It was a close race in my mind, at least! With the way your style is developing-- especially your faces, which are amazing-- it won't be long before you start picking up some awards to go along with the adulation.

I also think, for the first award show, they wanted to have the winners present to accept the awards. I don't mean any disrespect to the creators, it's just something I've noticed with new award shows.

Hey, I love David's work and would have no qualms with him winning - all of the nominees were worthy candidates.
We just went by the public vote and the public selected Kaare this year.
It has been suggested that we "rigged" the vote for it to go to the winners that were present at the event, but perhaps this is a bias being suggested by vocal fans of creators that did not win. If a non-present creator had won the award, for most creators a proxy would have been present to receive the award and give it to them, or we would have sent the plaque to the winner by courier. Dave Sim ended up receiving the award for Hal Foster's Hall of Fame award because the Foster family couldn't be there to accept it in person, so they asked him to pick it up and say a few words.
I'll state this clearly: more votes were received for Kaare, therefore he won the award.
18 of the 27 nominees were at the event. Most of the other 9 had a proxy to pick it up. We only handed out 6 awards (there was one tie).
Personally, I had never really encountered Arcana Studio's books before we began the awards, but obviously the people on the west coast have, they have very strong representation in the votes. I kind of thought that Drawn and Quarterly would have won myself.

Well, I'm not gonna argue whether the awards was rigged or not. I like Kaare Andrews' artwork, as well as the others nominated. It's all good!

I love Karre Andrews but Finch is the fucking greatest. He only got less votes because he was'nt there. I've met them both twice but Finch was the only one who rocked enough for me to sneak in a bottle of wine to give him at last years toronto comicon.
P.S. New Avengers is the greatest comic out there and Finch is very modest. Trust me, I dont think he has any idea how fucking great he is. Too many video games i think.
Excitedly for Augest,

Finch should have won. I know I voted for you, I thought it was a no brainer.

There's a good reason Dreamwave didn't win, Torontonians hate them.
Pat Lee screwed over a lot of good people when he folded the company.
It must be nice to still have your Ferrarri to drive to Just Desserts while the writers and artists can't pay their bills.
Too bad Dave, maybe next year.

To be honest, we weren't surprised to see them nominated as they started 2004 as the biggest Canadian publisher (along with Drawn & Quarterly that is, but D&Q reaches a very different audience). But their fall was meteoric and you've touched on some of those reasons TLR.
How they ended the year definitely affected the vote.
