View Full Version : BB Review Group voting thread for 11/15

Thudpucker
11-10-2006, 04:42 PM
Quick summary of what this thread is:

This thread is for everyone to determine what book we will review in the BB Review Thread. In the past we took turns picking a book but now we are openly voting for titles we would like to see reviewed. Everyone is welcome to participate, no need to ask.

After visiting the Midtown shipping list (or another one you prefer) and looking over the choices please nominate one book. At the end of the week (thread closes on Tuesday at Noon EST) the title with the most votes wins. Feel free to lobby for your choice as much as you please :)

There are no restrictions on what you can nominate and vote. Any publisher (no matter how small) any price (singles, trades, hardcovers ect) and import titles are all fair game.

We will do a new thread every week to do these votes

Here's the list of what is shipping 11/15:

Time to pick next weeks book :)

Up early! Sweet! :D

I'm going to go with Birds of Prey #100. After the last incredible issue, and considering the big changes going down this issue(possibly giving a higher profile to a very popular character on this board), I think our own Ms. Simone deserves to her flagship title reviewed.

there is a preview of white tiger #1 here:

http://popcultureshock.com/?p=40333

Roaring out of the pages of Daredevil, the new White Tiger makes a ferocious debut, courtesy of the dynamic scripting of NY Times best-selling fantasy author Tamora Pierce (Trickster’s Queen, The Will of the Empress) and masterful penciling of
rising star Phil Briones (La Geste des Chevaliers-Dragons, Les Seigneurs d’Agartha). Angela del Toro knows pain: Her uncle Hector Ayala, the former White Tiger, killed. Her FBI partner, murdered. Her career, ruined. Her mentor, Matt Murdock, jailed. And the hurt is just beginning….The Yakuza’s bloodthirsty Sano Orii returns, a genocidal shadow organization appears, and a new-but-old super-powered madman is looking to put the squeeze on White Tiger. Armed with mystical amulets—and finally in costume—White Tiger demands answers! But will she survive long enough to ask the right questions?

I knew you were going to nominate that! I is s-m-r-t! :D

No, seriously, I looked at the list and thought to myself "only two real choices here". It's a good week, but most of the good stuff coming out isn't at a friendly jumping-on point.

Nothing really jumps out this week, so I'll nominate a trade that I've been looking forward to:

WATERLOO SUNSET TP

written by ANDREW STEPHENSON
art & cover by TREVOR GORING

WATERLOO SUNSET is a maze of mysteries... Beware of too easy assumptions. They will perish, as truths are laid bare.

Thirty years ago London's heart was stripped of what a modern city needs - food, water, power, medicine, transport, communications, security... The wreck survived.

Now a stranger arrives, bearing an urgent message. In days the destinies of London and of Earth will change.

I figured it was a good book to nominate, if only because the majority of us have read Bendis/Maleev's Daredevil, and saw the character from 'point zero', if you will.

I was kind of curious to see where she goes from there, and especially in another writer's hands.

Also, the fact that the writer is female also intrigued me. We don't have enough of them in 'mainstream' books.

The cool thing is that the writer of my pick is female too. This is like the comic geek version of a Condi/Hillary Presidential race.

I'll go with a pick that has no chance of winning but i'd like to see reviewed regardless.

Squadron Supreme Vol 1 Pre-War Years HC

I've been trade-waiting this book and i've heard so many different view-points on the difference and quality of the relaunch versus Supreme Power. Seems like good Review Crew material and discussion to me.

Obviously, it wouldn't be required to actually buy the HC for those who already own the singles. Just a re-read and review.

But like i said it won't win and i'm fine with that. White Tiger # 1 is a great pick and i'm looking forward to that as well.

I read Waterloo Sunset in singles and loved it. It's definitely a ... niche book though, and not for everyone. So, while I'll be buying the trade, I'm thinking it's not a good choice for the review group.

Iron Man - I didn't hate Knaufs' run on this, I just didn't think it was anything really special. I really enjoyed Carnivale and was hoping for some of the depth and strangeness of that in the comic. Didn't happen though, the Iron Man arc seemed pretty standard. I'm buying this issue to see how they bring it forward into Civil War, but I'm not feeling heaps o' love. So it doesn't get my vote.

I'm actually buying and reading New Avengers #25 this week - have not liked this run AT ALL but I really want to read this issue and the next one (Maleev's gorgeous art insures I'll like 26 even though I may not like how two of my very favorite Marvel characters get handled.) The problem is, I had to promise someone I know that I would keep my &^%$#@ mouth shut if I didn't like NA #25. So it doesn't get my vote for the review group.

The two titles I'm looking forward to this week the most are Astro City and Death Jr. The problem there is that Astro City is the second volume of this run, continuing the story of the Royals, and if someone didn't read V1, I'm doubting they'd like it or be able to follow some of the nuance. Death Jr., being an Image book, is just as likely not to ship as scheduled as it is to ship, so it's probably not a good choice.

So, in wordy conclusion, White Tiger #1.

That's the problem with reviewing the Iron Man issue - it has a lot of baggage outside the title. Does it get reviewed solely as an issue of a comic about a guy named Tony Stark who puts on a tin hat and fights evil? Or does it get rated on how it fits into Civil War, how it stacks up against Bendis' and Millar's characterizations?

If we were going to do a compare-and-contrast review, we should have picked NA #25 and this issue of Iron Man. And maybe thrown in Civil War #5 for good measure. Or we could just call it "Iron Man Special" and take a look at all of them and how they do or don't fit together.

Criden
11-13-2006, 04:00 PM
I dunno, Mo--I think people are welcome to mention how it ties in if they want, and if they don't want to, they can just review the issue on its own merits (or lack thereof). I assume it'll be a little different for each of us. Let's see if we're even reviewing it, though.
