It depends...some times a creator's ego gets the best of him (John Byrne Rob Liefield), and sometimes the creators work is overrated to begin with (Jim Lee and Rob Liefield)...

It happens in every facet of our society. We build someone up to expectations they can't possibly reach then we tear them down.

I can't believe I'm more or less agreeing with Scourge, but...

I wouldn't call Jim Lee overrated -- the hype surrounding him is impossible for anyone to live up to -- and he can draw. Liefeld -- I never understood how he ever got rated highly (or even got work)... I like to think in his case it's just the fans coming to their senses.

Yes, but some people bring the hatred on themselves...K-Fed, anyone...

I don't believe he ever qualified as a "fan-favorite".

The biggest factor, in any form of entertainment, is staying past your prime. And really, not even so much your prime, but staying in the spotlight too long.

Sucking helps.

And sometimes fans decide they're too cool to be fans anymore, like all the pretentious U2 bashers.

No, but he could have led the good life being Mr. Britney Spears, but he had to go out on his own and bring down a lot of unnecessary heat and drama on himself...I think that the country had a collective orgasm when K-Fed got F-Ued by John Cena a month or so ago...Everybody wanted to do something like that to this tool and Cena fullfilled a lot of wishes out there by doing that...

I've no idea who John Cena is.

Jim Lee came to town here in Missoula. I was never and am not a fan of his work - BUT - he had about 30 original pages up in the gallery in the local shop and they were absolutely devastating. I have never seen lines that perfectly rendered, ever. It has a machine like perfection that was scary.

Has a past body of work that is almost universally loved, then kinda went away for awhile, then when they came back everything they did wasn't as great as what they'd do previously, thus spurring their fan base.

See: Lucas, George; Miller, Frank.

In any medium, if you get too cocky and arrogant, and start saying and doing provocative things, people will immediately start hating you. If you want to be loved, you have to act humble and know your place.
